'The Mick' Season 2, Episode 3 'The Visit' Recap: Extra Trouble In Prison [SPOILERS]

This is so far the funniest episode of “The Mick” Season 2. After going through relationship issues in the previous episode, things are finally back to normal (well, not really normal seeing how dysfunctional the Pemberton kids are and how messed up Mickey thinks).
We start the episode with Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) bringing the gang to an Apple farm for a picnic. The only thing missing? Food. Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia), Chip (Thomas Barbusca), and Ben (Jack Stanton) all complain that they should’ve just went to a restaurant if Mickey wanted some quality time for all of them. Mickey says that they’re broke, and so they had to make it work somehow.
While they try to make sense of things, Sabrina receives a call from her Mom who’s in prison. She doesn’t want to answer because she still has some pent up anger against her. Chip urges her to answer it, but she refuses still. Chip then tries to grab the phone from her so he could answer it, but Sabrina is adamant. This leads to an apple throwing match between the two siblings, and Mickey gets caught in the crossfire when Sabrina accidentally throws an apple at her and hits her neck.
Once they’re all back home, Chip and Sabrina continue their fighting upstairs while Mickey complains about how they should channel their anger somewhere else. Mickey deduces that maybe the kids have angry feelings due to their parents leaving them, and so she comes up with a plan to have Chip and Sabrina visit their parents separately.
Sabrina and Poodle make up
Mickey tricks Sabrina into going to see her mom by telling her that they were on their way to a spa date. They arrive at the female penitentiary and finally has a sit-down with Poodle Pemberton (Tricia O’Kelley). Mickey psyches Sabrina up into releasing all her anger so that Mickey won’t have to deal with it in the future. When Poodle comes in, she one-ups the conversation by immediately apologizing to Sabrina for being a bad mother. Mickey and Sabrina are surprised, but Sabrina is sort-of happy.
After their talk with Poodle, Mickey and Sabrina try to analyze what happened over lunch. Mickey says that it was odd that Poodle only apologized for being a bad mother, and not to Mickey too. Surely she needs to get some credit after she took care of the Pemberton kids when Poodle was arrested right? This makes Sabrina realize that Mickey, too has some form of resentment against Poodle, her sister. Mickey denies this but ultimately fails to hide it when she loses her cool as their lunch is served.
And so they go back to talk to Poodle. Mickey demands an apology from her, to which Poodle refuses. They get into a shouting match about how they went against each other ever since they were young. Mickey calls for a fight with Poodle, and they take it outside.
The two sisters are now ready to spar, while Sabrina looks on annoyingly. Mickey and Poodle engage in a brawl, and just when Poodle seems to get the upper hand, Sabrina loses her cool and attacks both Mickey and Poodle. While hitting them both, she shouts out all her anger against them. Turns out that the fight was all they needed to clear the air out and make peace with each other.
Visiting hours end, and Poodle says to Sabrina and Mickey that she will talk to some lawyers so they’d have money. Poodle says I love you to Sabrina, and everything’s good.
Chip goes on a mission to save his dad
Jimmy (Scott MacArthur) takes the Pemberton boys to see their dad Christopher (Laird Macintosh). Jimmy tricks the boys by saying that they were all going to a water park—which turns out to be a maximum security jail where Christopher is detained.
As soon as they arrive, Chip is obviously anxious and has some issues that he needs to resolve with his dad. When their time to talk comes, Chip finds out that his dad was being sexually harassed by his cellmate. Christopher says that Chip isn’t his real son, but Chip ignores it and chooses to worry over his dad’s situation. And so he comes to Jimmy for help. Together they try to figure out what action to take to help put a stop to his dad’s plight.
Ben is left behind (well, it is a maximum security facility) and so he wanders by himself. He walks in on a group of inmates beating up another co-inmate and immediately befriends them. The group likes Ben and they all have some prison “game time.” While playing a cockroach race game (in which the winner gets all the cigarettes), the inmates find out that Christopher is Ben’s dad. These guys know what Christopher’s cellmate is doing to him, and so they take this into account. Meanwhile, Chip and Jimmy play the good cop-bad cop routine. They try to bribe Christopher’s cellmate so he’d stop harassing him, but he refuses. Chip loses his cool, to no avail.
Finally, it’s time for them to go. Ben says goodbye to his inmate friends and gives a toy airplane to the leader of the group. The leader knows exactly what he’s going to use it for, and thanks Ben for it. As soon as Jimmy and the kids leave the penitentiary, Ben’s inmate friends come to his dad’s rescue. Christopher’s cellmate tries to harass him again but is cut short when the group’s leader stabs him to death.
All is well
Everyone’s back at home, and Sabrina recounts how cathartic it was for her to finally be at peace with her mom. Mickey feels the same way, saying that the fight had them all seeing clearer perspectives. Chip and Jimmy tell them about Christopher’s sad situation when he suddenly calls Chip’s phone. He tells him that everything’s okay and that his cellmate has been dealt with. Christopher ends the call by saying that he loves Chip like a son. Now that’s when Chip realizes that he’s actually not Christopher’s biological son.
Ben walks in without his shirt on, and everyone sees that he now has a tattoo (which he obviously got from his prison visit) that says “Greenwich.”
‘The Mick: The Visit’ Overall Verdict
As compared to last week’s episode, this one turns up the humor up a notch. Relationship issues are still being addressed; but now that everything is settled, it’s exciting to look forward to what’s going to happen next. Everybody’s cool with each other now, and the only thing missing is another burning house or one of Ben’s stressful “accidents.” This has been a good episode, and I can’t wait to see how Mickey and the Pemberton kids celebrate Halloween on the next episode.
“The Mick” continues next week with “The Haunted House,” Tuesday, October 17 at 9 PM on FOX.
