The simulation continues to amaze and keep us scratching our heads. A fourth installment in the Matrix franchise is moving forward, and it’s packing a strong bullet-dodge attitude as it brings back the original core cast.
According to Variety, The Matrix co-creator Lana Wachowski is on board to once again write and direct the follow-up, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. However, the role of Lawrence Fishburne’s Morpheus is currently left vacant, with sources saying that it “may be recast for a younger take.” Plot details remain tightly under wraps.
The Matrix 4 comes after Warner Bros. struggled to get the ball rolling over producing rights. But with Reeves racking up massive fan acclaim over box office hits John Wick 3 and Toy Story 4, the project was hastened with Wachowski sparking renewed interest after working on its script. Aleksander Hermon and David Mitchell co-wrote the screenplay, with Wachowski producing alongside Grant Hill.
In a statement, Wachowski said, “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
The first three Matrix movies—The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions—spawned a decent fan following with its unique take on alternate realities and inter-dimensional concepts. The Matrix trilogy has a collective global gross of $1.6 billion, making it one of the most successful movie franchises in the last 20 years. The movie portrays a futuristic dystopian society that’s unknowingly trapped inside an AI-made simulation in an effort to siphon human energy as their source of life. Neo, a gifted hacker, discovers a glitch that points to the simulation and is driven to spark a rebellion against the machines responsible for throwing humanity and reality in disarray.
The Matrix 4 has no release date as of yet but is eyeing a 2020 production start.
