Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian' Will Explore the Formation of the First Order

We still don’t know anything about the First Order in the latest Star Wars trilogy—until now. This fall will see the debut of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian on Disney+, and it will give us a glimpse of the early days of the First Order.

Speaking to Entertainment WeeklyThe Clone Wars creator and Mandalorian director Dave Filoni and showrunner Jon Favreau dished out on where the show will incorporate the First Order’s backstory. “What could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order?” Favreau said. “You come in on Episode VII, [the First Order are] not just starting out. They’re pretty far along. So somehow, things weren’t necessarily managed as well as they could have been if [the galaxy] ended up in hot water again like that.”

“This doesn’t turn into a good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars,” Filoni quipped. “You get that the Rebels won and they’re trying to establish a Republic, but there’s no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. You have in a Western where you’re out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes good luck finding one.”

Initially led by Supreme Leader Palp—er—Snoke, the First Order was introduced as an “offshoot” of the recently-dismantled Galactic Empire in Return of the Jedi. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) then took over the helm after he assassinated Snoke in The Last Jedi. Other than that, the backstory of the First Order wasn’t explored that much (take note, the trilogy will wrap up with The Rise of Skywalker, and we still have no clue).

Although, books set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe did give a little background on the First Order’s sinister beginnings. Chuck Wendig’s “Star Wars: Aftermath” and Claudia Gray’s ” Star Wars: Bloodline” showed how a small remnant of the Empire managed to wage war against the New Republic, spawning the birth of the First Order six years before The Force Awakens.

The Mandalorian will also follow the story of Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon, a former Imperial officer left powerless after the death of Emperor Palpatine. It remains to be seen if Moff Gideon will be one of the frontliners of the First Order, but it’s very likely that his story will eventually tie into the origins of the Empire offshoot.

The Mandalorian premieres Tuesday, November 12th on Disney+.
