Director Rian Johnson says his own Star Wars trilogy is on hold because of scheduling issues, but if he can’t make any new films, how about a SW series?
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson confirms that he would only be open to making a Star Wars series if he had the right story for it. He says, “If I had an idea that I was excited about, that worked better as a show than a movie, I’d do it that way.”
Admittedly, a lot of Star Wars series have suffered from being retooled original concepts. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was originally conceived as a film and had to be extended to fit the TV format; but a property like Andor which was developed as a series was considered some of the best Star Wars material to ever come out.
We don’t know when Johnson will ever come back to Star Wars, but you can bet I will be first in line when he does return for a new film. He updates, “At the moment, we’re in between making the next Benoit Blanc movie, and thinking about Poker Face. I keep getting together with Kathy [Kennedy] and having conversations.Who knows? Making The Last Jedi was the best experience in my life, so I should be so lucky.”
Fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too long until Johnson’s return to a galaxy far far away.
