[00:01:30] This time, we look into Dani’s past. It seems the shadowy figure in her visions is a childhood friend, Edmund. They entered a room where their families were waiting. The poster behind them states, “from childhood sweethearts to happily ever after!” Edmund told everyone the story of how he first proposed to Dani. Everyone clapped. The party continued until evening. Edmund’s mother pulled Dani into another room to give her a dress. She looked in the mirror and told Edmund’s mother that it was beautiful.
[00:06:00] Back at the manor, Jamie went to Dani’s room to talk. They were going to attend the funeral of Owen’s mother. Dani was ready to go, but Jamie knew something was off—Dani’s dress was too vulgar for a funeral. She told Jamie it was her only dress in black. Jamie told her she didn’t need to attend the funeral. Dani was relieved. She recently had a funeral, and she wasn’t ready for another. She then asked Jamie for help to remove her dress. She turned around and saw Edmund’s figure in the mirror, which startled Dani, and Jamie thought she hurt her. Jamie told Dani she’d be back in a few hours and told her to relax since it’s her day off.
[00:08:00] Dani decided to go to the chapel, but she saw Flora by the tombstones, so she went over. Flora was doing some drawings. She asked Dani if Owen’s mother will be at the funeral. She answered maybe she will. Then, Flora told Dani that her parents weren’t there at their funeral because they had died far away. They had to bury empty boxes and pretend, which she thought was silly. Dani thought Flora just imagined things, so she didn’t take her seriously; she replied that Flora’s parents will always be with her. Flora told Dani that they weren’t there; she kept searching for them, but they weren’t anywhere in Bly. Dani told Flora her pants were getting wet, so she ran inside the chapel.
[00:10:30] Flora laughed and told Hannah about her pants. Dani went over to Hannah as Flora kept drawing on the floor. Hannah didn’t go to the funeral because she didn’t want to go to town. She shared that she hadn’t entered the town church since her wedding and added that she mourns and pays respect in her own way. Hannah took Flora back to the manor to prepare for dinner. Dani stayed in the chapel, lighting a candle for the people she forgot to remember. Then, she picked up Flora’s drawings and returned to the manor. Jamie arrived as they were preparing for dinner. She told them about the funeral and how Owen was doing. Dani went to the sink to wash the chopped vegetables when she felt a hand by her waist.
[00:13:30] She looked down and saw a black hand coming to hug her. Dani looked up and saw Edmund’s figure in the mirror. It startled her again, so she dropped the colander. Jamie asked her if she was alright; she answered she’s fine. Dani stepped out of the kitchen for a breather. She saw Peter walking outside the manor and followed him. He was making his way towards the front door, so Dani rushed ahead, grabbed the iron poker, and opened the door. But she found Owen when she opened the door, shocked at Dani holding an iron poker to his face. Jamie went to the door to check things out. She tried to calm Dani down. Dani told them that she thought Owen was Peter. Hannah invited Owen for dinner and guided him to the kitchen.
[00:15:30] Jamie took the iron poker from Dani, still panting in shock. Hannah made shepherd’s pie: Owen’s favorite. He remembered how his mother used to cook it for him. Flora told Owen he wouldn’t die and recalled how she felt when her parents died—she felt like she would also die. Then, she realized that she was still alive but felt really sad. She shared with Owen the secret of how she moved on with life. “Dead didn’t mean gone,” Flora mentioned. She told Owen the words and that he didn’t need to be sad. Flora’s words touched everyone, but Miles ruined the moment. He asked Dani for a glass of wine, but Dani refused. Miles told Dani everyone else is having wine.
[00:19:00] Miles remembered how Peter would give him wine when he visited the manor. Owen recalled how his mother would give him some run-down wine, a mixture of water and wine as he recalled it. Miles demanded real wine as he pounded his fists on the table. Dani didn’t condone his behavior and sent Miles to bed; she also told Flora to go to bed. So, Flora went on her way, then Miles followed. Dani also followed them to get them ready for bed. As Flora was brushing her teeth, Dani saw her dollhouse open. She opened the dollhouse and took one of the dolls resembling Peter. But Flora told her not to touch her dollhouse because she had a very particular specific system to it. Flora saw Dani holding Peter.
[00:21:30] Dani asked her if they ever saw Peter after he left and added if they ever let Peter inside the manor. Flora answered they never allowed Peter inside the manor because that’s not how the system works. Flora suddenly looked over Dani’s shoulders again, so she confronted Flora about what her mannerism meant. Flora told her that she wasn’t looking at anything and didn’t know what she meant. Dani went over to Miles to talk to him before bedtime. She told Miles they were alike—she didn’t have parents growing up either. Her father died when she was Flora’s age. Although Dani’s mother was still alive, she didn’t feel her.
[00:23:30] Dani told Miles that people like them are special and lucky because they get to choose the best adults who will be part of their lives. Miles acknowledged Dani’s statements and thought that they were special. Dani left Miles to sleep. She went down and saw Jamie waiting for her, gave her a jacket, and told her they were all outside. Owen setup a bonfire and brought out some bottles of wine. He noticed Hannah was drifting away and called out to her. Hannah apologized and told Owen she’s been drifting out a lot lately. Dani stared into the fire and remembered her last night with Edmund.
[00:26:00] Dani and Edmund were eating in a restaurant when Edmund decided to talk about their wedding. She told Edmund she didn’t want a big wedding because it was expensive and needed too much planning. Edmund felt for a second that Dani no longer wanted to get married—he was right—Dani no longer wanted to get married. Edmund asked Dani what he did or didn’t do. Dani told him it wasn’t like that, but Edmund decided to stay silent for the rest of the night but confronted her inside the car. He didn’t understand why Dani would break off their wedding. Dani explained she didn’t say anything sooner because she didn’t want to hurt him or disappoint his mother. But the further Dani explained, the further things seemed absurd for Edmund, so he decided to leave Dani in the car.
[00:28:30] Dani tried to stop Edmund from getting out of the car. Edmund forced Dani to let go. He got out, and the lights of the oncoming truck shone on his glasses—he got hit! He couldn’t move as Dani went over to check on him. Dani got back to reality as Jamie explained what the bonfire meant. She told everyone that bonfire originally meant “bone fire.” People would light up bonfires to burn old bones and cast away the shadows of the past. Winter would approach, and people do it because the nights are longer and the shadows are greater. Jamie asked them if they wanted to burn some bones for their bonfire.
[00:31:00] Hannah started and offered a toast to Rebecca Jessel. Jamie took her turn and proposed a toast to Dominic and Charlotte Wingrave. She then asked Dani if she has anyone she needs to pay tribute to. Dani didn’t want to make a toast, so Owen took his turn, said a few words on his mother’s behalf, and offered a toast. Dani stared into the fire again and remembered the time Edmund died. The doctors went into the visiting room of the hospital and told them the bad news. Edmund’s parents cried their hearts out as Dani went to the bathroom. She was about to vomit, but she held it in. It was the first time she saw Edmund’s figure in the mirror, and it hasn’t stopped ever since. During Edmund’s funeral, she saw him holding her shoulder in the mirror.
[00:37:30] Dani took a coat and covered the mirror up in front of Edmund’s family. She apologized and left after. Dani and Jamie decided to leave Hannah and Owen by the bonfire. Jamie took Dani to the greenhouse to talk. Dani decided to tell her what happened between Edmund and her. Jamie asked Dani if Edmund was around. Dani checked, but Edmund wasn’t there. Jamie was still talking to Dani when she decided to kiss her. She checked again for Edmund. Dani continued after confirming Edmund wasn’t there. But when Dani opened her eyes, Edmund was there. It startled her enough for Jamie to stop kissing her. She wanted to continue, but Jamie lost the mood and wanted to return. She headed out of the greenhouse, and Dani followed her.
[00:42:30] Dani remembered the time she went to London. Edmund’s mother visited her just before she left. She gave her a bowl of lasagna and Edmund’s glasses. Dani didn’t want to accept the glasses, but Edmund’s mother couldn’t bear to look at them nor throw them away. Dani took both as a sign of respect. She saw the cab approaching her house, so she told Edmund’s mother that she needed to go somewhere. Dani placed the lasagna in the fridge and left. Jamie and Dani got back to the bonfire. She told Owen it was time to go home. Jamie told Dani that everything’s good between them before she accompanied Owen to her truck.
[00:45:00] Dani decided to go back to the manor. She went to bed, but she couldn’t sleep. She kept staring at Edmund’s glasses. Meanwhile, Flora suddenly woke up and saw her dollhouse was open—a doll was missing. Flora knew Miles had taken it. Dani decided to go down to the kitchen and get the bottle of wine. She wanted to drink herself to sleep, but Miles and Flora appeared behind her. They stopped Dani from returning to her room. Miles told Dani that Flora had a nightmare and she couldn’t sleep. She told them to go back to bed, but Flora insisted on staying up for more minutes. Dani asked Flora what her nightmare was all about. She told Dani she heard a loud noise coming from her closet. As Flora continued her story, someone sauntered behind Dani.
[00:47:00] The woman was heading outside the manor. Miles and Flora could see her as she moved across the hall. They specifically stopped Dani so that she won’t encounter the figure when she went up the stairs. Dani insisted on getting the children in bed. Flora managed to convince Dani to get her a glass of milk to stall for a few more minutes. Dani headed into the kitchen as Miles checked if the woman had already left. He went to the door and took a peek outside. He couldn’t see the woman anywhere, so he closed the door. Dani got Flora in bed as she apologized for what happened earlier. She told Flora there’s nothing to apologize for and added it’s okay to be afraid.
[00:49:00] Flora went to sleep as Dani went downstairs again. She opened the wine bottle and took a sip. She noticed the muddy footprints going outside the house again. Dani went back to the bonfire, which was almost out, then threw Edmund’s glasses into the remaining embers. The fire slowly melted the glasses away. Then Edmund appeared in front of Dani, but she was no longer afraid. She sat beside the dwindling fire and drank from the wine bottle. She told Edmund it’s just the two of them.
