Nicholas Hoult may be playing second fiddle to Dracula in Renfield, but he’s also the dim-witted husband of Elle Fanning’s Empress in Hulu’s The Great. The series is set to come back with its third season this May, and we have a new trailer that updates us on one of television’s most dysfunctional couples.
Check it:
The trailer pretty much gives us everything we can expect from the show, with Catherine (Fanning) having great ambitions for the people of Russia, and Peter (Hoult) just wanting to have fun and go hunting.
While the two have clearly antagonized each other throughout the start of the show, the last season had the two actually falling in love, but Catherine ends up hating Peter anyway because he had unwittingly been the cause of death for her mother.
We don’t know exactly where the story will go based on its deviations from history, but Catherine the Great of Russia definitely had some wild stories, and we should expect the show to cover most of them by the time it ends.
Here’s the official description for The Great:
The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. A fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter. Incorporating historical facts occasionally, the series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
Catch The Great when it premieres with its third season on May 12 on Hulu.
