The Girl from Plainville: Elle Fanning Stars in Series about 2014 Texting Suicide Case

Elle Fanning had just gotten off a good season of The Great, and now she’s teaming up once again with Hulu for something more on the dramatic side. Here’s the first teaser for The Girl from Plainville.

The series focuses on Michelle Carter, who, back in 2014, was the center of a case that involved the suicide of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy. It’s said Carter had been texting and calling Roy repeatedly to kill himself, until he finally did. The case of Roy’s suicide had sparked a huge debate, as there are arguments on how much criminal liability Carter has when she pushed Roy to commit suicide.

Oddly enough, the series also has some strange connection to the hit Fox musical, Glee. The show’s EP and writer Liz Hannah told Deadline:

“So much of the show is about loneliness and isolation and for every character involved…something that Glee did that I think was so interesting was make people who were lonely feel included.  That was really bittersweet to explore for Michelle’s character – this idea of inclusion through this show when she couldn’t do it in real life… We have to thank Hulu again, it was really amazing to be able to allow us to use Glee as a tool to explore that.”

This is gearing up to be an interesting series. Besides Fanning playing the lead, I would love to see just how much a series about theater kids influenced one kid to convince another to commit suicide. I guess the Glee curse affects more than just the actors.

The Girl from Plainville premieres on Hulu March 29.
