'The Gifted' Season Finale 'oMens' Recap: Greater Purpose

The Gifted made their choices, and now it is time to stand up for them. Regardless of the setbacks that the Inner Circle experienced, the uprising still happens. Meanwhile, the Mutant Underground finds themselves boxed in as the Purifiers surround their hideout. Chaos engulfs the entire town as Purifiers and Mutants take the fight to the streets.

In the season finale of The Gifted, Reeva Payge (Grace Byers) orders the Inner Circle to start the uprising. At the Mutant Underground’s hideout, an angry mob of Purifiers, led by Jace Turner (Coby Bell) stand hungry for mutant blood. Surrounded, Lorna Dane/Polaris (Emma Dumont), Marcos Diaz/Eclipse (Sean Teale), and John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford) plan an exit strategy. As this happens, Frost Sisters (Skyler Samuels) abduct Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) to serve their purposes.

Benedict Ryan (Peter Gallagher) gives Jace the mission he looked forward to ever since joining the Purifiers: purging the Mutant Underground. As he stood outside the Underground’s hideout, he prepared his gear, anticipating their next move. Inside, the Underground is in disarray. Lauren and Andy got abducted, and if they did not move soon, then they are done. With that, John decides to stall for them while they escaped.

John has a score to settle with Jace, so he furiously engulfed himself in battle. None of the Purifiers stood a chance against John as he went on a rampage, hurting all who stood in his way. However, John could only take as many bullets before he started to feel weaker. As soon as his friends’ van escapes, John vanishes from the scene. While he hid to recover from his injuries, Erg (Michael Luwoye) finds him. John knew he had no choice but to accept Erg’s help; he could not possibly take on that much Purifiers. As if on queue, Jace appears right after John punches Erg enough for him to absorb then deflect. In a matter of moments, Jace’s team of Purifiers fall to the ground as Thunderbird overpowers Jace, giving it his all as he punched Jace ferociously.

While their parents, Reed (Stephen Moyer) and Caitlin (Amy Acker) went o the basement to get supplies, Lauren and Andy looked outside to see what was going on. Suddenly, Fade (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and the Frosts appear out of nowhere. Using their mind control abilities, the Frosts take Lauren and Andy with them. They needed the Strucker siblings for one thing: destroying the Sentinel Services Headquarters.

Unfortunately, Lauren and Andy could not shake off the Frost Sisters’ hold on them, causing them to demolish the building. However, Esme visibly disapproved of what they were doing. When the Underground finally catches up to the Frosts, Esme makes her choice. Inevitably, Marcos had to kill Sophie and Phoebe Frost, since they had no intention of letting anyone against them live. Because of the mental damage that the Frosts did to Lauren and Andy, the mission fell on Marcos, Lorna, Reed, and Caitlin’s hands.

Thanks to Lorna’s knowledge of the building, infiltrating the Inner Circle’s stronghold started smoothly. However, Fade, Bulk (Renes Rivera), Heather (Chelle Ramos) and Tico (Tyshon Freeman) were also in the basement. A battle quickly ensues between the opposing Mutant forces. Realizing how all this was going to end, Reed decides to take on Reeva alone. At first, Caitlin refuses to let Reed go, but eventually, she realizes the truth in his words. If Reeva tried to attack Reed’s unstable powers, it would backfire. With that, Caitlin covers for Reed as he ran to the elevator.

Amused, Reeva taunted Reed and mocked his entire persona. This behavior may have been the cause of her downfall. Without thinking twice, Reeva attacks read with her screams, which seemed to affect Reed considerably. However, Reed’s unstable powers served his purpose this time around. Reeva’s power did nothing but make Reed’s stronger. Reed’s body failed to contain his abilities, causing him, as well as everything and everyone around him, to disintegrate.

Rise From The Ashes

The tragedy caused by the Inner Circle’s actions left another scar on humanity. As others’ views on mutants never change, some mutants start to look up to the Mutant Underground. Longing for leadership and guidance, these mutants gather in the most obscure places to keep themselves away from detection. Now, The Struckers, Eclipse, Polaris, Thunderbird, Erg, and Esme take on the responsibility of building a new beginning for all mutants. That is, until Clarice Fong/Blink (Jamie Chung) portals out of somewhere, asking for their help.

‘The Gifted’ Season Finale ‘oMens’ Final Verdict

Although much of the finale felt rushed, it still gave proper closure to the events of this season. Also, something that the viewers surely want is more fights scenes, just like the ones in this episode. Hopefully, the next season expounds more on the new group of Mutant Leaders. Their differing origins and personalities are sure to add more substance to the plot if done correctly. Ultimately, Season Two’s finale felt less like a finale but more than a typical episode. Despite the room for improvement, the season’s conclusion is still acceptable.
