'The Gifted' Season 2 Premiere: 'eMergence' Recap: Dawn

Following a division of the mutants at the end of The Gifted‘s previous season, the Mutant Underground relocate to Nashville. Elsewhere, the Inner Circle brings their plans into place. While the Strucker siblings seem to feel each other’s presence, a series of power surges affect the city. Something great was about to happen.

In the season premiere of The Gifted, the Mutant Underground saves a handful of mutants from a Sentinel raid. Meanwhile, Eclipse (Sean Teale) and Caitlin Strucker (Amy Acker) resort to desperate measures in their search. Elsewhere, the Inner Circle prepares for Polaris’ (Emma Dumont) birth.

Six months after Sentinel Services’ raid on the former HQ, the Mutant Underground continues to search and help endangered mutants. This time, Sentinel Services targets a suburb home to numerous mutants. Luckily, Eclipse, Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Blink (Jamie Chung), and Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind) rescue a handful of mutants. One of these mutants, a girl named Cristina (Danube Hermosillo), got separated from her sister, Jazmine (Mia Ella Clyburn).

After a short debriefing, the team decides to split their forces. Thunderbird and Blink would track Jazmine while the rest of them stay at their temporary hideout. However, Eclipse mentions that he found a lead that could bring them to Polaris and Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White), but he had to reach out to criminal elements. This information causes some tension between the team, but it quickly fades.

Unfortunately, Thunderbird and Blink did not bring Jazmine home with them. Still, Thunderbird says that there were no signs of struggle, so it is possible that Jazmine received help from their fellow mutants. When Lauren dreams about meeting Andy somewhere in the capital, Caitlin decides to contact Eclipse to visit his criminal source: a mutant hacker named Wire (Brad Carter).

Eclipse and Caitlin’s visit to Wire was a bit tense, but they made it out with some information. However, this came at a cost when Caitlin gets grazed by a bullet to the waist. When Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer) receives this news, he immediately tries to get home when suddenly, his powers start to manifest.

Reed finally gets home to talk to Caitlin, but then, something odd happens. Before he could tell her about his powers, Eclipse knocks on their door, urging them to follow him to the rooftop. When everyone else assembled there, Caitlin realized what was happening: Polaris is giving birth.

Reeva Payge (Grace Byers) knew that the Inner Circle would not like her course of action. Because of this, she set up a meeting with all of its leading members. The meeting turns out to be a trap as she used her powers to disorient the members while Esme, Sophie, and Phoebe Frost (Skyler Samuels) took them out.

Six months later, they welcome Polaris and Andy into the Inner Circle. Having claimed leadership of their mysterious organization, Reeva is now intent on using the Circle’s wealth and influence to bring about her brand of Mutant justice. Polaris and Andy are great additions to their roster, but they had to deal with Polaris’ pregnancy first.

Since Polaris’ pregnancy was no ordinary one, Reeva decided to have the Frost Sisters (Skylar Samuels) look for a building capable of withstanding Polaris’ power discharges, a result of her labor pains. The Frosts quickly found and acquired a munitions factory. After this, Reeva ordered the construction of a birth chamber that kept them safe from Polaris’ power.

Finally, Polaris went into labor. As this happened, power surges happened across town. Inside and outside the building, objects flew and some even hit the walls. In the middle of labor, Polaris’ Doctor (Paden Fallis) tells them about her complications. Polaris is suffering from a mental block that prevents her from giving birth to her child.

Once again, the Frost sisters use their powers to show Polaris a vision of the future that they want to achieve. This vision helped motivate Polaris and finally, let her deliver her baby safely. As this happened, power surges around town stopped, causing the Mutant Underground to lose Polaris’ trail. As Eclipse knelt in frustration, Polaris cradled their baby in her arms, naming her ‘Dawn.’

The Gifted continues on Tuesday, October 2nd with ‘unMoored’ at 8/9c on Fox.
