'The Gifted' Season 2, Episode 11 'meMento' Recap: Morals

After the Mutant Underground rescues one of their leaders from The Purifiers, they take a step back from the action. Meanwhile, the Inner Circle welcomes recruits fresh from the Mutant Breakouts they caused. The Gifted reach their defining point. As one considers defecting from a once noble cause, another rediscovers a dark family legacy.

In this week’s episode of The Gifted, Lorna Dane/Polaris (Emma Dumont) asks for Marcos Diaz/Eclipse’s (Sean Teale) help in spying on the Inner Circle’s leader, Reeva Payge (Grace Byers). Later, Eclipse and Clarice Fong/Blink (Jamie Chung) asks the Morlocks’ aid. At home, Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind) rediscovers her ancestors’ dark and troubling past. Meanwhile, The Purifiers resume their Mutant hunting.

Mutant Killer

Despite the attack on one of their bases, The Purifiers decide to go on another patrol. Officer Wilson (Tom O’Keefe), who recovered from his injuries, joins Jace Turner (Coby Bell) and a handful of Purifiers in a routine neighborhood patrol. Their intel leads them to a shelter for homeless people, where mutants are said to have been hiding out. Once there, Wilson and Turner corner a couple of teenage mutants. Unfortunately, what was ideally an interrogation ends in bloodshed when Wilson fires on one of the mutants. Eventually, the police arrive in the scene and arrest Wilson for the murder of the mutant boy. Jace lies about the incident, telling the officer who interviewed him that it was an act of self-defense since the mutant threatened Wilson.

Later that night, Jace’s wife, Paula Turner (Frances Turner) gives him a call after watching Benedict Ryan’s (Peter Gallagher) show which aired his and Wilson’s act of bravery. Jace struggles to talk to her, ending the call abruptly. He knew that what they were showing was a lie and that he is partly responsible for the mutant boy’s death.

After seeing how powerful and how different Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) is, Caitlin Strucker (Amy Acker) suggests that the Underground attack the Inner Circle. However, they were outmanned and outgunned, so they had to improvise. When asking other chapters of the Underground for help fails, Marcos decides to reach out to the Morlocks, given Clarice’s affinity with them. However, the Morlocks could not help them directly, but Erg (Michael Luwoye) offers something that could help them. When Clarice returns home to tend to the recovering John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Evangeline (Erinn Ruth) gives him a call, telling him to assemble the Underground for an assault.

Ever since her encounter with Andy, Lauren became obsessed with training as well as her family’s origin. Lauren’s newfound obsession alarms Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer), but to Caitlin, Lauren’s improving strength is an advantage. Late at night, Lauren dreams about her ancestors, Andreas, and Andrea Von Strucker. Lauren witnesses Andrea’s death. At the same time, she uses her powers in her sleep. Reed and Caitlin finally wake her up, but there surely was someone who noticed the commotion.

The next morning, the landlord, Art Rael (Wayne Hughes) shows up at the Strucker’s apartment, asking about the noises from their apartment. Reed assures Art that it was just Lauren, or ‘Lila’ having a seizure. However, Art was discontent with his answer, so he calls the police to search the apartment hours later. Fortunately, Lauren diverts the cops’ attention outside the apartment, so they leave.

Unimpressed by Art’s actions, Lauren heads to his room. She gives him a show of her powers, warning him not to contact the authorities again, or suffer the consequences of doing so.

Reconciliation

On the way to the Underground’s different chapters, Lorna sidetracks Marcos. She asks for his help in dealing with a new problem. Reeva recruited the mutants who were responsible for sinking the Ignavus Cruise Ship which claimed some innocent lives. Also, Lorna acknowledges the mistakes she made in their relationship, making Marcos agree to help her.

Thanks to the Morlock’s information, Marcos and Lorna tracked Reeva in a remote train yard, utterly rid of security. When Reeva arrives, the duo watched her meet with Benedict Ryan and then exchange information. Reeva and Benedict were up to something big, and there is no telling what their next move could be.

‘The Gifted’ Season 2, Episode 11 ‘meMento’ Final Verdict

While the Underground’s meeting with the Morlocks was predictable, Reeva’s alliance with Benedict was not. Ultimately, Reeva fooled Andy and Lorna into thinking that they are fighting for a noble cause. Now, because of Benedict’s involvement, the Inner Circle’s plans even more unclear. Whether or not they are after the Underground is still unknown, but it is highly likely.

The Gifted continues on Tuesday, January 15th with ‘hoMe’ at 8/9c on Fox.
