'The Gifted' Season 2, Episode 10 'the eneMy of My eneMy' Recap: Save

In war, we often hear that ”the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Now, The Gifted find themselves in this dilemma. Following the Purifiers’ capture of one of their core members, the Mutant Underground decides to enlist the help of their former members, now members of the Inner Circle. Despite their difference of beliefs, the once solid team choose to achieve a common goal. However, the cooperation that they made does not change the course of the war.

In this week’s episode of The Gifted, the Mutant Underground decides to ask their former members for help. Agreeing to push their differences aside, Lorna Dane/Polaris (Emma Dumont) and Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) agree to help rescue John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford). While Jace Turner (Coby Bell) and the Purifiers interrogate John, the mutants launch a surprise rescue mission.

The Mutant Underground’s beginning started with John, Lorna, and Marcos Diaz/Eclipse (Sean Teale). As explored in the previous season, the trio had ups, downs, and lots of life-threatening missions together. As John started the cause, he gave refuge to numerous mutants, including the Struckers. Now, John needed their help. The current members of the Mutant Underground: Clarice Fong/Blink (Jamie Chung), Reed (Stephen Moyer), Caitlyn (Amy Acker), and Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind) reluctantly rely on their help. Because of this, Lorna and Andy decide to push their loyalty to the Inner Circle and save the man who once rescued them, too.

Torture

While in Jace and Officer Wilson’s (Tom O’Keefe) custody, John experiences subtle torture measures. Jace wishes to squeeze whatever information he could from John, but John continually resists. However, John does tell Jace about the Inner Circle. At first, Jace does not believe him. But as soon as Jace gets a hint of Lorna and Andy’s defection, he gains interest. Suddenly, the Purifiers are under attack by none other Eclipse and Polaris. Thinking that John lied to him, Jace shoots John with a shotgun multiple times, until he had to escape.

Thanks to the Inner Circle’s resources, the Mutant Underground finds Thunderbird’s location. Once there, they see the heavily guarded compound, crawling with armed Purifiers. Eventually, the team comes up with a strategy. As Polaris and Eclipse cause a distraction, Blink, Lauren, and Andy teleport to the back of the building to extract John. Taking the Purifiers by surprise, Polaris and Eclipse quickly disorganize their force. Meanwhile, Blink, Lauren, and Andy finally reach John in time. Suffering from his wounds, John required support from Blink as they walked away.

When a Purifier named Kyle (Lowrey Brown) pulls a gun out on them, Andy goes on a rampage. Sensing that Kyle aimed at Lauren, Andy used his powers to undermine him. However, Andy did not stop there. As Kyle begged for his mercy, Andy broke his knees and arms. Lauren had to step in as Andy almost killed the man. When they exit the compound, the Struckers looked at Andy in horror after they witness what he did. The Struckers have an argument about this, but Andy ultimately made his decision to do what has to be done. Realizing that they have to leave, Polaris says goodbye to Eclipse but gives him a final kiss as they went.

‘The Gifted’ Season 2, Episode 10 ‘the eneMy of My eneMy’ Final Verdict

This chapter is an excellent follow-up to the major cliffhanger of the last episode. It was nice to see the original members of the Mutant Underground work together once again. Also, Coby Bell’s performance as Jace is top notch. While his character usually remained as a minor one, his role in this season expands into a more significant one. As the plot continues in its complexity, we are left to wonder if the war between humans and mutants will ever end at all.

The Gifted continues on Tuesday, January 8th with ‘meMento’ at 8/9c on Fox.
