The Mutant Underground and The Struckers are planning to hit Sentinal Services—but it wouldn’t be easy saving the people they love. “The Gifted” Season 1, episode 4, titled “eXit Strategy,” has Marcos risking everything to break Polaris out. He seeks out an old friend from his dark past in order to obtain some useful information. Meanwhile, Lauren and Andy attempt to combine their powers in order to help the group. Reed also tries to convince Polaris he is on her side. The two become cellmates before they would be transported to another facility.
The Risky Escape Plan
The episode opens with a flashback two years ago with the Mutant Underground helping mutants escape from a facility. When it looks like they’ve succeeded in helping out their fellow mutants, guns are fired and a few of their own were killed. Cut to present day, where we see Eclipse trying to convince everyone to help them save Polaris from Sentinel Services. They have less than 24 hours to save them before she and Reed are transported to another holding facility.
Most of the other members of the Mutant Underground are reluctant to join Eclipse and Thunderbird. Recalling their previous escape mission had six casualties, only a few volunteered to help. Because of the lack of support, Andy feels hopeless about saving their father. Andy and Lauren decided to do what they can to help with the plan. The Strucker Siblings practice how to use their abilities, finding out how their powers combined are a whole lot more powerful. They show Thunderbird what they can do and proposed they use it to bust the wheels of the bus transporting Reed and Polaris.
Meanwhile, Marcos visits an old flame to get some intel about Sentinel Services. He visits Carmen in hopes to make a deal with her father to get information about two prisoners captured by Sentinel Services. But after finding out her father retired and Marcos has to make a deal with his ex-girlfriend. In exchange, he has to use his powers to torture someone about a drug cartel. Marcos was able to give intel about the route of the bus transporting Reed and Polaris. Their plan focuses on stopping the bus before they reach the facility.
Unlikely Pair Stuck In A Prison Break
Polaris was surprised to find her prosecutor in a cell right next to hers. She still feels uneasy around Reed since he was threatening her for information about the Mutant Underground. He tries to convince her he knows Marcos and is in there with her for the same reasons. But after opening up about escaping Sentinel in order to save his Mutant Children, Polaris points out Reed’s past actions. She tells him off about every single mutant he captured and sent to prison. Now that the tables are turned, he is only running because he has something to run from.
But what if his kids weren’t mutants? Would he be saving them or continue to send each one off to prison? Because before his children’s mutant abilities surfaced, he was one of the bad guys. That’s a little hard to forgive just because he’s now a fugitive. But Reed still tries to reach out to her by offering her hope not only for her safety but for her unborn child. For his redemption and to show he is no longer in cahoots with the Sentinel, Reed plays a vital role in their escape, answering for his past mistakes.
A Happy Reunion for ‘The Gifted’
As the two are bonding, the plan is being set into motion. Andy and Lauren try to stop the bus but Andy has a hard time controlling his powers again.
In order to save everyone and making sure the plan pulls through, Lauren rattles her brother up. He works better angry according to Lauren. Caitlin tells her children to run back to the Mutant Underground Headquarters as she gets an escape car for Reed and Polaris. But they were met with other complications when a newly introduced mutant named Pulse, makes it difficult for the others to harness their powers. This new mutant was introduced in the beginning of the episode as Thunderbird’s ally and supposedly dead. However, it’s revealed he has been helping Sentinel Services in capturing mutants.
Hurt by the betrayal of an old friend, Thunderbird was still able to knock Pulse out. Meanwhile, in the bus, Reed and Polaris take advantage of the stop to escape. The two take on two guards and successful knocks them out. To free them, Reed asks Polaris to take out the metal screws in his leg to cut their plastic restraints. They were able to escape and Polaris was able to use her powers again when she got rid of the collar. She takes out Sentinel Services’ weapons easily.
Reed and Polaris run off with Eclipse and Thunderbird as soon as Caitlin comes along with their escape car. The Strucker Family are now reunited, as well as Polaris and Eclipse. It looks like a happy ending for “The Gifted.” But as soon as they ride off Agent Jace Turner screams his frustration vowing to capture every and any mutant sympathizers who will come in their way.
“The Gifted,” continues next Monday, October 30th, with “boXed in” at 9/8c on FOX.
