The hero in Barry (Grant Gustin) prevails as he hides his feelings to save everyone else in the latest episode of “The Flash,” titled “Fury Rogue.” With Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) gone, Team Flash still had to go about saving the day; they didn’t have time to mourn his death. But team leader Barry Allen has to if he wants to stop everyone else from dying. We also get to see a little bit of Earth X’s Leo Snart (Wentworth Miller) in this episode.
Harry’s shrinking mind
In the last episode, Harry (Tom Cavanagh) channeled a lot of dark matter into his intelligence booster to help save the day. Unfortunately, too much is never good. The amount of dark matter that entered his brain fried it. Now, the part of his mind where intelligence lies is slowly deteriorating. Before he knows it, he will have to relearn everything. Harry knew his knowledge is what makes him Harrison Wells, so he asked Gideon to run tests repeatedly, but the results never changed.
So, when Cisco (Carlos Valdez) has the bright idea to make another booster to match his brain waves, Harry was on the fence. After a perfect point from Cisco, saying that two heads are better than one in stopping DeVoe, Harry agreed.
He then made the cap but not completely. Cisco could feel his neurons tingling. But after a while, the cap started to short circuit and Harry had to take it off Cisco’s head. When Cisco checked, he saw that something is missing. Harry was determined not to fix it.
When the two were starting to argue again, Harry destroyed the cap and admitted that he just wanted to save Cisco from ending up like him. Cisco became extra mad when Harry told him that dark matter had a role to play in his degrading intelligence.
Ralph’s death takes a toll
A few days after DeVoe (Neil Sandilands) killed Ralph, Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) visit Dr. Finkel (Donna Pescow), their therapist. It’s obvious that Barry is desperately hiding his feelings. He kept saying he was fine. Using the amount and gravity of death as an excuse; Barry said that he just learned how to deal with it.
It took Snart to help him confront his feelings. They went to Earth-X to ask for his help to protect Fallout (Ryan Alexander McDonald), the nuclear meta, from DeVoe. Unfortunately, an elite ex-assassin, Siren X (Katie Cassidy), followed them to Earth-1 and wreaked havoc.
Wearing a nuclear-proof suit, Neil Borman went with the team to go to an off-the-books place Argus provided. But, Siren X, with her supersonic powers, heard their plan and intercepted them. She came just as DeVoe was about to take Fallout.
DeVoe used his newly acquired gravity-manipulating powers to make their truck float for a bit then crash back down. He used Killgore’s powers to shut down comms. DeVoe then came face-to-face with The Flash and Snart. He’s DeVoe, so of course, he knew about everything. Barry used the sonic scepter to disable DeVoe, but he was unfazed with the powers he stole from the Elongated Man.
Barry froze when he heard his old friend’s voice come out of the old man’s body. Memories of Ralph flooded his mind. He didn’t do anything when Lauren Lance’s Earth-X counterpart arrived and rendered them unconscious with her scream. She took Neil, Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), Joe (Jesse L. Martin), and Snart’s gun. DeVoe didn’t look too competent, so he hid in his pocket dimension.
Feelings over the mind
DeVoe was furious when he got back to his lair. His intelligence got the best of him. He predicted everything that was going to happen except the outcome. The Flash was supposed to defeat Siren X but instead stood there, idle.
Marlize (Kim Engelbrecht) tried to calm her husband down. She made her point that he did not account for what Barry was feeling. This made DeVoe even madder. He already warned her about “thinking” when she thought wearing his favorite dress on her was a good idea. He was starting to lose all emotion, just tagging Marlize along as a mechanic and supporter.
Sadly, she can’t remember anything that had to do with his lying and brainwashing using The Weeper’s tears.
Back at Star Labs, Leo had a heart-to-heart talk with Barry about death. Ralph’s death was different from the others Barry’s been through, that’s why he did not want to grieve. He drilled it into The Flash’s mind that he should confront his feelings or they will confront him.
Siren X went up a level and used Fallout make everyone in the CCPD precinct unconscious. Snart and Barry ran to the precinct while Harry avoided all heavy responsibility and Cisco took over the desk. The injection Caitlin whipped up to protect them from Fallout’s powers were slowly fading. Siren X’s scream kept increasing Fallout’s rads. Barry and Snart were on the ground defenseless from her screams.
Snart had the cold gun Iris gave, and Catlin felt like Killer Frost again with the weapon Siren X took. They cooled Fallout down but Siren X screamed, and they flew away.
Flashes of Ralph froze Barry again, but Snart kept yelling to deal with the pain and that it wasn’t his fault. He used the memory of Ralph for strength. He got up and pushed Siren X to the ceiling. Caitlin and Snart continue to cool Neil down, saving the city.
Facing the loss
After the whole ordeal at the precinct, The Flash ran to his old office and broke down in Joe’s arms. He felt guilty for failing to save Ralph.
With Fallout safely with Argus, Barry had time to deal with his grief, and Leo Snart had time to tie the knot. Aside from Ralph, the team also lost Killer Frost. Caitlin was hit the hardest, of course. For now, she only has notes to remember her by. Catilin ran some tests, but no dark matter was left in her DNA. But, there was an anomaly, all she has to do was figure out a way to get Killer Frost back out.
Meanwhile, Harry’s losing his intelligence, the one thing he thinks is the most valuable part of him. But Cisco convinced him that something else was more important, Jesse. Harry raised her to become one of the most respected women in their time. That’s worth more than any math equation.
The West-Allen couple went back to Dr. Finkel, and Barry finally opened up. He was sad that it was too late when he got to see Ralph grow as a person and that never got to tell him he was proud of him. Barry also felt responsible for what happened to him.
“The Flash” continues next Tuesday, May 1st, with “Therefore She Is” at 8/9c on The CW.
