'The Fix' Series Premiere Recap: The Attorney's Comeback

In a lawyer’s career, certain cases would either make or break you. The Fix gives us a view on how bad things turn out when a County Prosecutor loses her lawsuit against an A-List Hollywood star. However, when the death of a woman under similar circumstances pops up, the call of justice becomes harder to decline.

In the series premiere of The Fix, County Prosecutors Maya Travis (Robin Tunney) and Matthew Collier (Adam Rayner) lose their double murder case against Hollywood A-Lister Severen ‘Sevvy’ Johnson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and his lawyer, Ezra Wolf (Scott Cohen). Ten years later, Sevvy’s current girlfriend, Jessica Meyer (Taylor Kalupa) winds up in dead, prompting Maya’s return.

Maya and Matthew were the District Attorney’s Office’s best lawyers. At the time of the double murder case against Sevvy, Maya and Matthew amassed much compelling evidence that could quickly have convicted Sevvy, were it not for his Hollywood Status. The backlash brought about their defeat was catastrophic. As a result, Maya fled to the rural parts of Washington and settled with her boyfriend, River ‘Riv’ Allgood (Marc Blucas). Meanwhile, Matthew remained in Los Angeles, worked hard to earn back a good reputation as a D.A, and married Effy Collier (Daniella Alonso).

Sevvy and his lawyer, Ezra may have won the case, but lost his Hollywood reputation. The years that followed shattered his hopes of filming another blockbuster film. Also, his relations with some of his family members were varied. Sevvy’s daughter, Star Johnson (Chasten Hamon) resented him for dating her roommate, Jessica. His sons, Gabriel Johnson (Alex Saxon), Samuel Johnson (Jordan Calloway), and Severen Johnson Jr. (Mitchell Edwards) support him, although Gabriel is the closest to Sevvy despite being the adopted son. America, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with him ever since the end of the case.

The death of his current girlfriend, Jessica, sparked public interest in him and the case once more. Ever since the first case, public opinion about Sevvy divided into two. The media swarmed the D.A’s office, hoping to get the scoop on Sevvy’s case. Also, the thought of Maya returning to try her skills against Sevvy and Ezra scared most of the lawyers in the D.A’s office, but they had little choice. They needed her help in the nailing the one suspect that she knew all too well.

Sevvy’s family, on the other hand, try their best to keep him away from the media and public scrutiny. In some occasions, Sevvy acted impulsively, heading to the police to try to help them find the killer. Luckily, Ezra and his team already worked on making the public opinion on Sevvy change in their favor. Ezra remains firm in doing whatever is necessary to keep his client out of jail.

The D.A’s office, on the hand, worked round the clock to find something. Also, they did not only focus on Sevvy but also on Ben Mitchell, Jessica’s client and the person who found her body. Jessica is Mitchell’s fitness trainer, and the police gave Loni Kampoor (Mouzam Makkar) a photo that suggests that their relationship is more than professional. Also, a portion of the episode shows Mitchell driving by a dumpster, throwing a golden cross necklace, then speeding away. Still, Maya and Matthew and the rest of the lawyers remained focused on finding probable cause against Sevvy.

The Warrant

Eventually, Matthew and Maya found probable cause enough to qualify for a search warrant. After reconciling with her best friend and former colleague, CJ Emerson (Merrin Dungey), Maya and CJ figure out Jessica’s situation. They suspect that Jessica is a victim of domestic abuse from Sevvy, and records on a Star’s storage locker show her numerous visits. Their hunches prove them right when Star cooperates and gives them access to the storage. There, CJ and Maya find a video camera containing self-recorded tapes of Jessica showing bruises and other signs of abuse from Sevvy. Jessica wished to turn over her videos to the police.

Unfortunately, Ezra has a double agent working in the D.A’s office: Loni. Loni notified him about the warrant that Matthew, Maya, and CJ currently have. As a result, Sevvy has Gabriel get rid of a suspicious looking bag with unknown contents, just in time for the cops’ arrival. In the mansion, Ezra, Sevvy, Matthew, Maya, and CJ finally meet again. Maya asks Sevvy, “Missed me?”

‘The Fix’ Series Premiere Final Verdict

The show cooks up a promising plot: A Hollywood A-Lister versus a seasoned District Attorney. The characters have varying personalities that suit each other, and the sub-plots bring intense conflict between all of them. As expected, the show will undoubtedly take a messy turn with each side desperately trying to emerge victoriously. The upcoming episodes will contain fiery plots and controversial dialogues; so the viewers are in for a fight.

The Fix continues Monday, March 25th, with ‘Revenge’ at 8/9c on ABC.
