The CW Orders Pilot for 'Batwoman' after Character's TV Debut

In The CW’s annual crossover event last year, Batwoman made her debut. TheWrap confirms that the CW ordered a pilot for a standalone series. Ruby Rose stars as Kate Kane/Batwoman for the series directed by David Nutter.

There previously has been news about this show in the works under Greg Berlanti. Now, more names are joining the project. Caroline Dries writes for the show as well as executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns. However, Johns will be producing under his new banner, Mad Ghost Productions.

Batwoman first appeared in the crossover event’s second episode. Her appearance starts with a mysterious backstory. As implied by the chapter, Batman does exist in her universe. However, three years passed since his last appearance. Also, his cousin, Kane, lives in an abandoned Wayne Tower.

In addition to this news is the projects’ official synopsis: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Once the show moves forward to the CW’s 2019-2020 TV Season, it will air alongside their current DC Universe projects. This lineup includes  Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning.
