After The Conners‘ Halloween Celebration, the family deals with numerous personal issues. One makes a few sacrifices to uphold traditional religious beliefs, while another goes on a political rampage when volunteering to help in a survey. Meanwhile, the loss finally gets to the family head, causing a search for meaning. In the end, they all realize that the company of family and friends is crucial.
In this week’s episode of The Conners, Dan Conner (John Goodman) finally faces his feelings about the loss of his wife. Meanwhile, Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) helps Mark Conner-Healy (Ames McNamara) with a political survey. Later, D.J. Conner (Michael Fishman) asks Darlene Conner (Sara Gilbert) to help him convince Mary Conner (Jayden Rey) to go to church.
Unbiased
Mark approaches his Mom, Darlene, and Grandma Jackie for help about a political survey he is doing for school. When Jackie volunteers to go with him, Mark ends up with startled voters because of Jackie’s overeagerness. Jackie scares a Democrat Lady and argues with a Republican Man. However, she does not stop there as a man who wore a ‘Make America Great Again’ cap passes by them. At church, Mark tells her that he decided to make an essay instead, since people do not take the time to listen, like Jackie.
Religion
Geena Conner (Maya Lynne Robinson) disappointedly finds out that D.J. did not take Mary to church for over two years. Because of this, Geena decides to bring them to church. However, Mary refused to attend the service unless the rest of the family went. As a result, D.J. asked Darlene to bring Dan, Jackie, Mark, and Becky Conner (Lecy Goranson) with her to church. Darlene reluctantly agreed since she was an atheist. On the day of the service, Mary was happy to see the rest of the family with them, all except Dan, who could not bring himself to go.

Dan had trouble dealing with the loss of his wife. He continually avoided his family and friends since he preferred to solve his problem alone. Despite this, his family tries talking to him, and they even ask Dan’s friends to come over, but to no avail. However, Dan does decide to go to a support group meeting that deals with loss, but he does not find this helpful. That night, Dan goes on a ride to search his feelings, thinking about how God did not follow through with their deal. After this, Dan’s mood improves, especially since he invites his friends over for a game of poker.
‘The Conners’ Season 1, Episode 4 ‘The Separation of Church and Dan’ Final Verdict
This episode highlighted the shift of the leading role to Dan Conner. It perfected the portrayal of an aged man who questions his life’s purpose after losing the love of his life. As tragic as this may sound, the episode never failed to capture the fun and humor of the show. As usual, the cast did a great job at pointing out current issues in a humorous way.
The Conners returns on Tuesday, November 20th with ‘Miracles’ at 8/9c on ABC.
