We only got a small cameo from Barry Keoghan’s Joker in The Batman, but there’s definitely more room for him to take the spotlight in the future.
Though Keoghan’s big interrogation scene was deleted from the final film, Keoghan does express his interest in coming back and has said he had done a lot of work on the character for his cameo.
Talking to Happy Sad Confused (via The Direct), Keoghan explains, “Obviously I’d love another crack. I’ve got a ton of back work done on him. If an opportunity does arise but, you know, they make the call, and I’ve got to respect that.”
So far, we don’t know where Matt Reeves wants to take the Batman sequel, but with multiple villains in the first movie having a varying size of roles, it’s very possible we could see the Joker have some kind of appearance in the next movie. Here’s the deleted scene just in case you haven’t checked it out:
While Joker has a lot of origins from falling into a vat of acid, to having his face scarred, this Joker’s smile is a result of a disease that leaves it on his face permanently; with The Elephant Man said to be an inspiration for this Joker’s mindset. Keoghan also notes, “I’ve got a few other things I’d love to bring. Actually, I have this little half-Moleskin book I’ve written a lot in already and so yeah, I want to show people what that is.”
We don’t know when Matt Reeves’ plans to put Joker in the spotlight, but I think I’m patient enough to wait for his debut in the third movie. Someone else needs to be in the spotlight for Batman 2.
