With Disney gearing up for more live-action remakes of its beloved classics, one iconic film will make it into the plethora of movies planned to hit the network’s exclusive streaming service—Lady and the Tramp. Justin Theroux was previously announced to voice the Tramp. Now, the Lady’s role will belong to Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson, according to Collider. The actress is currently in negotiations to voice the lead role.
First released in 1955, Lady and the Tramp follows the story of Lady, a golden cocker spaniel, and Tramp, a mongrel dog as they meet and begin an unlikely love story. Lady is owned by a sophisticated family, while Tramp is a stray. The two encounter various challenges as they learn about each other’s lives. Eventually, Tramp is adopted by Lady’s owners, leading them to have puppies of their own.
Lady and the Tramp will be released as a Disney streaming service exclusive in 2019. The Lego Ninjago Movie’s Charlie Bean will direct the remake, with a script penned by Andrew Bujalski.
Thompson is fresh off of her recent projects to date, Sorry to Bother You, Annihilation, Furlough, and Westworld. Meanwhile, another Marvel Cinematic Universe actor is set to join Theroux and Thompson. Benedict Wong, who plays Wong in Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War, will voice Bull, one of Tramps’ stray dog friends.
