Following the controversy of Scooter Braun’s acquisition of Taylor Swift’s catalog, Swift reveals that she’s not buckling down the very least. In an interview with Tracy Smith for CBS’ This Morning, Swift confirmed plans to re-record her past songs.
In the snippets of the interview, Swift revealed that she’s set on re-recording her past hits—which now belongs to Scooter Braun after his $300 million acquisition of Big Machine Label Group—as a way of regaining control of her catalog. When Smith reconfirmed if the plan was set, Swift replied decisively saying “Yeah, absolutely.” The entire interview will air this Sunday, August 25 on CBS.
Taylor Swift Continues the Fight
The controversy started after Braun’s acquisition of Big Machine Label including Swift’s catalog. To this, Swift responded that she wasn’t warned in advance and that she found out with the rest of the world online. She completely opened up about it in a Tumblr post saying she was “sad and grossed out.”
“I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years,” the “You Need to Calm Down” singer said in the post. “This is my worst-case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.”
For his part, Borchetta posted a statement on the Big Machine website titled So It’s Time For Some Truth. There, he defended himself saying that Taylor was informed of the situation in advance. He said, “Taylor had every chance in the world to own not just her master recordings, but every video, photograph, everything associated [with] her career. She chose to leave.”
Borchetta also defended Braun against Swift’s statements saying that Braun was always positive about Taylor. He said, “As to her comments about ‘being in tears or close to it’ anytime my new partner Scooter Braun’s name was brought up, I certainly never experienced that…Scooter has always been and will continue to be a supporter and honest custodian for Taylor and her music.”
Swift’s confirmation comes along with the release of her new album, “Lover.” It kickstarts her new projects under her new label, Republic Records. Before that, she has sold more than 50 million albums and 150 million single downloads worldwide. Swift also received 10 Grammys, 33 American Music Awards, and an Emmy. Her current estimated net worth according to Forbes is at $360 million.
