SyFy Cancels George R.R. Martin's 'Nightflyers' Horror Sci-Fi Series

After a moderately successful season at SyFy, the network will not renew George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers for a second run.

According to Deadline, the move to cancel the show wasn’t because of poor ratings—in fact, the outfit reports that “linear ratings were pretty modest despite stunts that included telecasts with limited commercial interruption across all platforms and weekend marathons giving fans an additional opportunity to catch up on the series.”

SyFy opted to not renew Nightflyers for season two for story reasons. The network thought that it would be better off if the show would be treated as a one-off limited series. Adding to that, David Alaja, who plays main character Roy Eris, is set to board another show on CBS, making him unavailable for a second shot at the role.

The space horror-drama follows the story of a group of space explorers aboard the spaceship “Nightflyer” on a hunt for alien life-forms. But when harrowing events occur during their journey, members of the crew begin questioning each other’s motives and realize that there’s another creature aboard the ship. With the challenges of survival and discovery, the crew has to figure out how to push through every ordeal.
