All right, buckle up everybody! This episode is going to leave you in pieces! After five freaking seasons of Supernatural, we get to lay our eyes again on Adam (Jake Abel), the long lost Winchester brother. It’s been too long Supernatural, it’s been too long! Thank the writers that nobody really stays dead in this show. This dude has had one of the worst fates in the show, to say the least. And he’s been kind of pushed to the back of the closet in the previous seasons. Now, he finally gets to settle that deal with his brothers. And it’s freaking bittersweet. He’s still family and yet, as one of his lines go “Since when do we get what we deserve.”
Anyhow, Abel gave one hell of a performance. He really sets the line where Adam begins and Michael ends. And at the same time, he manages to endear and earn sympathy for both characters as the abandoned brothers. Until now, even though we’re really near the end, I still wish we could’ve seen more of him with his brothers. Aside from him, there’s another beloved character coming back and well, hell’s balls, it’s frankly one of the best surprises. Before I spoil all the fun here, here’s what went down in the fall finale of Supernatural.
Poor Dear Donatello
Last week, Dean (Jensen Ackles) was just getting his bearings back together. Now, he seems to finally have found a key clue on how to defeat Chuck (Rob Benedict) via the demon tablet. The thing is, as Sam and Dean realize, Chuck made the demon tablet as a failsafe for humanity to put demons and angels back into hell and heaven respectively. And it seems that he wrote it in the event that he couldn’t do it himself when he’s incapacitated. So, to find out what’s his Achilles heel, the Winchesters get help from the prophet Donatello (Keith Szarabajka).
Cass (Misha Collins) drags poor old Donatello out of his home and though he’s very hesitant at first, he settles down to read the demon tablet. In the midst of it, Donatello notices some annotations from Metatron. As it says “the Almighty guards his secret fear but, it is always there.” The only problem is the only person who knows this is God’s favorite son. Since Lucifer was already cast down by the time the tablets were written, the only person who could’ve been God’s favorite son was Michael. And well, we all know where he went five Supernatural seasons ago.
Just as Donatello starts going on a hilarious rampage about how nothing is easy with the Winchesters, Chuck goes on broadcast through the prophet. And he threatens to go all-powerful on all of the Winchester’s loved ones if they don’t stop snooping around that little piece of clue they found. But, seriously, when do the Winchesters ever bow down to threats like that?
The Queen is Back!
With no way to stop Sam and Dean, Cass only sighs and rolls his eyes. Then, he accompanies them down to hell to seek out Michael. Down there, they’re immediately met with demons. And just when they’re all on the losing side, somebody yells stop. And guess who it is? It’s goddamn fucking Rowena! I swear, I could’ve kissed the screen then and there because, damn, oh hail queen Rowena! Hearing her say “Hello, boys” once again makes me want to burst in tears. I honestly thought we wouldn’t see her ever again, but this is Rowena after all. Now, she’s the new queen of hell. How’s that for a comeback?
After ordering her minions to locate Michael, she settles down to have a little chat with Sam, Cas, and Dean. The first thing Sam tries to do is apologize, of course. But, Rowena shushes him and assures them all that she couldn’t be any happier. She even tells them that if she’d known she’d become the queen of hell, she would’ve wanted to die a lot earlier.
Noticing that something’s off between Cass and Dean, Rowena asks Sam to get her more whiskey. Then, once she’s alone with them, she settles back and says, “Tell your auntie Rowena.” But, neither Cass nor Dean would admit anything. So, like a mother, Rowena plainly tells them to fix it else they’d have regrets. And if there’s one person who knows about regrets after death, it’s Rowena. Soon enough, a demon comes back with a short report. Michael’s not in hell anymore.
The Lost Brothers Return to Supernatural
Meanwhile, in a diner somewhere, Adam is gorging on burgers, fries, and pizza. I mean, after 10 years in hell, who wouldn’t miss all that greasy goodness. The best part of it though is that he seems to have formed quite an endearing bond with Michael. And their most striking similarity as of the moment is that they both don’t know who to go to from there. Michael thinks his brothers are dead and his dad isn’t coming back. And Adam doesn’t really think much of the Winchesters after they left him to rot in hell.
Later on, just as Adam is discussing getting a job, Lilith comes along to pick him up for God. But, with all that spite against his father, Michael refuses to go with her. As Michael says, “He can come to talk to me himself.” Then, he proceeds to turn Lilith to a pile of ashes. Because of this, Donatello locates him and alerts the Winchesters. Unfortunately, after killing Lilith, Michael flits all around the world and ends up in Cairo, Egypt.
On the other hand, while waiting for news about Michael, Dean takes the chance to discuss Sam’s budding love life. Though there’s clearly something there, it seems that Sam’s not ready to take it up a notch with Eileen (Shoshannah Stern). But, Dean encourages him to go after it. After all, Eileen gets their life and the concept of a family with her doesn’t seem too impossible.
Reunited
Back to Michael, there would be no way to catch up to him in time so Cass tries to draw him to them instead. Giving him the gist of the situation, Cass prays to Michael. Fortunately, the statement that their father is now their enemy gets Michael to come flying home. He also hasn’t forgotten that Cass called him an assbutt and helped send him to the cage so, there’s that. As soon as he arrives, Cass traps him and the Winchesters manage to take him back to the bunker.
Back home, the three try to convince Michael that God isn’t who he thinks he is. But, being the ever-faithful son, he refuses to believe them much less trust them. He also doesn’t forget to throw the abandoning your brother part to Sam and Dean’s faces. Sam tries to convey their regrets over it but, Michael tells him that he shouldn’t be the one Sam should be saying that to.
Imagine everyone’s surprise when Adam pops up without trouble. As it turns out, he and Michael struck up a deal in their time together and now, they’re like partners. Having their younger brother right in front of them, Dean tries to find words to say. And Adam helps him out by suggesting he start out with “I’m sorry.” Before Dean could, however, Michael regains control and tries to argue again. Before his anger could get the better of him, Adam pops up again and tells the guys to let Michael cool for a second knowing he’s not in the listening state.
Unveiling the Truth
Later on, Adam tries to convince Michael that the Winchesters might have a point. And unlike earlier, it seems that Michael’s more willing to listen to him. It only goes to show how much their relationship has evolved in their years together. As Adam explains, in his short time with Sam and Dean, he recognized that they did things because they really believed in them. Plus, God did leave Michael, his alleged favorite son, to rot in the cage all these years. So, maybe he didn’t really know his dad that deeply after all.
When Cass comes to check on them later, Michael attacks him. So, to prove that they’re telling the truth, Cass relays his memories to Michael. And it’s safe to say that after that run-down, Michael gets really distraught.
Meanwhile, Eileen is contacted by an old friend who’s now hunting down a vampire nest near the area. In one call, it seems that she’s suddenly attacked. So, Eileen and Sam rush over to help. When they get to the place, however, there’s not one vampire nor blood on the sight. As it turns out, they were running into a trap by none other than Chuck.
Sorry
Back at the bunker, the betrayal comes washing over poor Michael. Because of this, he turns a complete 180 and gives Dean and Cas the spell to lock God away just as he did with the darkness. The only problem is that one of the ingredients, nectar from a leviathan blossom, is in purgatory. Thankfully, Michael snaps open an entrance for them that’ll stay open for 12 hours. But, that’s as far as he goes.
Dean sets him free. And just before he walks out the door, Dean requests to talk to Adam. And this time, he finally apologizes to his younger brother. Dean says,” What happened to you…you’re a good man, you didn’t deserve that.” But much like a real Winchester, it seems that Adam has learned to live with his fate. With a smile on his face and tears brimming in his eyes, he responds “Since when do we get what we deserve?” Then, he wishes them good luck and walks out the door.
Supernatural continues on Thursday, January 16th at 8/7c on the CW.
