Jensen Ackles is once again lending his musical talents on screen in this week’s episode of Supernatural titled ‘Last Call.’ And well, it’s amazing as always. As fun as that rodeo is, however, Dean’s adventure in this episode is more about finding his fight again even if it means going up against an old friend. Meanwhile, Cas (Misha Collins) reunites with the boys to help out with finding a way to defeat Chuck (Rob Benedict). And surprisingly, he has become more cunning since the last episode. I mean, he has grown a ruthless side but, damn this Cas is kinda scary.
Overall, this episode isn’t as high-strung and adventurous as the past few ones of Supernatural. But, it’s nice to see a change of scenery. Cas is serving some threats. Sam is here being a loverboy. And then, there’s Dean actually broadly smiling. It’s like there are no threats of despair and misery in the horizon. But, who are we really kidding? Here’s what went down in tonight’s episode of Supernatural.
Disappearing Girls and Old Pals
Outside a bar in Texhoma, Texas, two girls try to make their way to the car, one of them drunk and the other trying to keep her friend upright. Before they could get in the vehicle, Sally (Georgia Bradner), the drunk girl, runs over to a corner to wretch her guts out. When she turns back around, her friend Angela (Madelyn Grace) and her car are missing. Later on, Angela wakes up in some kind of basement with a tube on her arm running towards the door of a cage in front of her.
A few days later, Dean (Jensen Ackles) sees the report of the missing girl and excitedly preps to head out. But, when he walks into the kitchen, he comes upon Eileen (Shoshannah Stern) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) who are both hungover and cooking real actual bacon and pancakes. And for the first time in the whole Supernatural history, Dean turns down the food and decides to leave the kids to it.
When Dean roles into town, he quickly realizes that the sheriff isn’t as concerned about missing Angela as he is. The man thinks that the girl only ran off to chase her Hollywood dreams. He even tells Dean that if he’s going to follow her there, he might as well try it out himself. According to the sheriff, Dean’s got the look. And he’s not exactly wrong.
Later that night, Dean heads over to the bar Sally frequents. And after getting his charm on with one of the waitresses named Lorna, Dean spots someone familiar rocking it up on stage. It’s his old partner Leo Webb (Christian Kane). And unlike most hunters, Leo has successfully parted from the hunting life and now owns the joint they’re in. That’s quite a rare feat in Supernatural.
Cass Returns to the Boys
Meanwhile, back in the bunker, Sam and Eileen have their noses buried in books trying to look for ways to locate Chuck or Lilith. Despite that, it’s obvious that the two can’t keep their eyes off each other. When they finally decide to put the books down and have a little more fun, that’s when Cass decides to barge into the bunker. And it seems that he has a solution to their problems.
As Cass explains, when Sam used the gun on Chuck, the bullet was filled with a part of his soul. And now, there might be a part of Sam in Chuck. With that working theory, Cass tries to use his powers to probe into Sam’s wound. But, Sam’s wound reacts and he’s blown off to the wall and knocked unconscious. Finding no way to wake him up, Cass calls up an old friend, the shaman Sergei (Dimitri Vantis). And he demands the shaman pay the debt he owes him after what he did to Jack in Supernatural’s season 14. Cass also doesn’t leave him any other option. Because in his exact words, “If you don’t help me tonight, I will find you and burn you alive.” Afterward, he dials up a mysterious stranger and asks for a favor.
An Old Pal’s Duet
Back at Leo’s bar, Dean and his old friend get to catching up. And, well, they’ve had some pretty outrageous times together. A few hunts after his last hunt with Dean, Leo decided to retire. And unlike Dean, he believes they deserve a rest as there are others there who can do the job instead of them. After their little chitchat, Leo gets up and hauls Dean to the stage to sing one of John’s favorite songs Waylon Jennings’ Good Old Boys. It doesn’t take much convincing because soon enough, Dean’s rocking it out with Leo in an amazing duet.
After their set, Dean notices some old geezers harassing Sally. And much like old times, he and Leo kick their ass and throws them out the bar. Then, Sally tells Dean everything that happened the night Angela disappeared. Strangely enough, Leo appears mistrustful and very unconcerned with Sally. He does, however, offer to help Dean. As they start formulating a plan, Lorna offers her two cents and tells the men to look at the scrapyard for Angela’s car. Without a second thought, Dean volunteers to check the scrapyard and bolts out the door.
Once in the scrapyard, Dean finds Angela’s car half salvaged already. When he pops the trunk open, he finds Angela’s cold, pale body. Then, he hears a gun click behind him. On the other end of it is no one other than Leo. Before he could utter a word, Leo knocks him out cold.
Inside God’s Head
On the other hand, Cass invites Sergei into the bunker. When he examines Sam, he reveals that Sam is dying. As it turns out, his soul is tethered to God. So, when Cass tried to probe into the wound, their connection became something like a rubber band stretched too tight. And when you stretch a rubber band too tight, what happens to it? It snaps. However, Sergei claims that he has a way to save Sam.
Unfortunately, Sergei is another sick lying bastard. Instead of making Sam better, he does the opposite and makes it worse. Despite this, Sam somehow gets into Chuck’s head and gains access to his memories. He also finds out that Chuck is weak. While he’s struggling inside God’s head, Eileen and Cass haul Sergei out of the room. There, Eileen becomes her most ferocious and does her best to threaten Sergei. Apparently, the shaman wants something called the key of death, a key that grants him access to death’s library. But, Cass isn’t having any of it. He’s done bartering.
Holding up a picture of Sergei’s niece, Cass tells the shaman that he has Bobby watching her. And if Sergei doesn’t do what they want, he knows what’ll happen to her. After that, Sergei pretty much submits to their orders and actually makes Sam better. In the end, despite not getting what he wants, Sergei offers Cass’ new tough and cunning bartering method a compliment saying it’s almost Russian. But, seriously, when and where did Supernatural’s sweet Cass learn to barter and be cunning like that?
Last Rodeo
Meanwhile, Dean wakes up in the same basement that Angela woke up in earlier. Soon enough, Leo comes strutting down the stairs. And as it turns out, he’s lost his faith in humanity and in good and evil. So, he’s chosen to be selfish. In his last hunt, he found some kind of creature that grants him wealth and money. The only thing he has to do in exchange was to feed it blood which means Angela probably wasn’t his first and last victim. Now, Dean’s up next.
When Leo leaves, however, Dean manages to break out of his constraints. The interruption of its feeding, however, upsets the creature and it slams out of its cage. Luckily, Dean fights it off and chops its head off in no time. Dean throws its ugly head at Leo’s feet. And afterward, a gunfight breaks out between the two old partners. But, they run out of bullets at the same time. Realizing that fighting is futile, Leo tries to talk his way out of it and asks Dean to forget everything and just walk out the door. But, Dean’s not having it. As he says, his job is to kill monsters. And as far as he’s concerned, Leo’s not any different.
The two men stand against each other quite well in a brawl. But, soon enough, Dean has Leo pinned against the wall with a broken pool stick in his abdomen. With his last breaths, Leo asks why Dean cares so much about the bullshit happening in the world. Dean answers, “Because someone has to.” Satisfied with his answer, Leo says “Well then, I’m glad it’s you” and gives Dean a nod to end him.
When Dean gets back to the bunker, he and Cass exchange short words pertaining to Sam. But, there’s more they conveyed to each other in what they didn’t say. Despite it all, Sam now knows and has strong faith that they can beat God.
Supernatural continues on Thursday, December 12th, with “Our Father, Who Aren’t In Heaven” at 8/7c on the CW.
