‘Supernatural’ Season 15, Episode 3 ‘The Rupture’ Review: The First Finale Deaths

After seeing the trailer last week for this week’s episode of Supernatural, I thought hey, maybe it wouldn’t be that bad. I had a strong feeling people were going to die. But, I still naively thought I could actually go through it and let go of some characters with a bit more control. Unfortunately, even after all these years watching Supernatural, it still gets worse every time. On the other hand, though, this episode was a great and very fitting farewell. And it really did stamp on that it truly is the final season of the show. Storylines are ending here, closure is getting there, and we’re truly moving toward the end. But first, the Winchesters need to close up hell.
Belphagor Figures Out Plan B
At the end of the day, Belphagor (Alexander Calvert) was just another demon. That “Crowley Jr.” thing didn’t hold up long. But, as it may, he’s the one who figures out a workable plan to close up the great big scar on Earth’s face to hell. After the spell that Rowena’s (Ruth Connell) been cooking up fails to put the souls back to hell, she reveals that nothing else would work and they’ve only got a few hours tops before the barrier collapses. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) immediately prepare for the worst. But, later on, Belphagor figures out a cohesive plan that just might save the day.
Instead of forcing the souls, Belphagor suggests shepherding them back to hell. How? Lilith’s crook. As the story goes, Lilith commanded absolute loyalty in hell. But, there was no guarantee that her minions wouldn’t do as they pleased on Earth. So, she forged the crook/horn which could retrieve all of hell’s creatures and bring them back home. She never had any use of it though and kept it stashed in her chambers in hell. Now that all the doors in hell are open, it’s just conveniently sitting there waiting.
The new plan is to blow that horn and have Rowena close up the wound on the ground with a spell of her own concoction. Belphagor requests someone to go down to hell with him for extra “muscle.” And Dean immediately throws him Cas (Misha Collins) like he just can’t wait to get rid of him. Ouch. Rowena requests assistance as well. She picks Sam to help her with the spell while Dean acts as the carrier of the spell’s connection outside.
The Last of Ketch
Meanwhile, Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) wakes up in the hospital. Before he could get out, however, Ardad shows up. And since Ketch didn’t assassinate Belphagor as was their deal, Ardad is understandably furious. In no time, she figures out that he was protecting his friends. She gives him another chance for any price to give them up. But, Ketch stands firm. Answering her question, he says, “Not for any price” just before Ardad brutally rips out his heart. With four words, Ketch ended his character arc beautifully and went out the Winchester way.
Back at the graveyard, Cas and Bel start on their part of the mission. And at this point, Cas’ elusion towards Bel turns to downright disgust. He is still mourning his son, Jack after all. Down in hell, they find that demons have been looting Lilith’s quarters. Luckily, Lilith kept the crook in a box sealed with an Enochian hymn for Lucifer. Cas reads the hymn but it doesn’t open. So Bel smugly suggests he do the right thing and sing it. Unfortunately, we only get 2 very short seconds of this singing Cas. For all the things I dislike about Belphagor, I admit he was pretty funny in this one. After the song, he even says “Oh Cas your voice, it’s like an angel.”
Cas’ Mourning Comes To a Head
Unfortunately for them, Ardad was right on their tail after getting their plan details using Ketch’s persona. She immediately charges Bel and Cas. And in the midst of their struggle, she reveals Belphagor’s true intentions of becoming the new king of hell. The said demon snuffs her out soon after with Cas’ angel blade. Initially, Belphagor denies the accusations. But, when Cas becomes pushy, he finally admits that he intends to use Lilith’s crook to absorb all those loose souls and amass power that could almost equal God’s. After all, Chuck’s gone. So, why not become the new god right?
Pushing Cas out of the room, Belphagor blows on the horn. Immediately, the souls start coming back in. Topside, Rowena and Sam start the spell. And Dean drops the hex bag connecting it on the hole which immediately starts healing up the Earth. Suddenly, everything stops. Down in hell, Cas tackles Belphagor breaking the crook in the process and rains down punch after punch on him. And without hesitation, Cas summons up what he has left of his angel powers and mercilessly burns Belphagor and Jack’s body to a crisp. In all of Cas’ mourning, this has got to be the most heartbreaking scene of all.
Rowena Sacrifices Herself
Knowing that their plan has failed yet again, Rowena comes up with a last resort. Taking a knife, she painstakingly digs out her last resurrection sachet from her chest and reveals her plan to Sam. Using death as a vessel, Rowena would suck up the remaining souls and take them to hell with her before the wound finally seals up. And it has to be Sam that kills her. It was written in Death’s books that her only real permanent demise would be by his hands. And for the sake of the world, he has to do it.
Sam immediately refuses. But, as Rowena lays down their odds, Sam’s determination falters. His grip on the knife becomes tighter and more firm. When Rowena says, “I know we have grown fond of each other, haven’t we? But, will you let the world die, let your brother die just so I can live?” she breaks his remaining resolve. With tears streaming down his face, Sam plunges the knife.
Rowena emerges to the graveyard with her body quickly absorbing the souls. And with one last look at Sam, Cas, and Dean, she says “Goodbye boys” one last time before she jumps into the hole. Through all those years of playing cat and mouse with death jumping from one side of the fight to the other, Rowena finally rests as a hero.
The Divide
With the souls and demons gone, the boys head home to the bunker. However, that doesn’t mean that everything’s back to normal. Sam’s not great. And no matter what Dean says to comfort him, Sam is deep in grief.
When Cas approaches Dean to talk about what happened, the conversation quickly goes sideways. Dean goes to blame every wrong thing happened lately on Cas. And as Cas realizes, Dean has lost his trust in him and still blames him for Mary. Even when his powers were clearly failing, Dean pushed him away and ignored him. “You don’t care. I’m dead to you.” Cas heartbreakingly says.
With nothing left to be said, Cas turns to leave. And with nothing left to hold on to, Cas decides to move forward. As he says, “Jack’s dead. Chuck’s gone. You [Dean] and sam have each other. I think it’s time for me to move on.”
Supernatural continues on Thursday, November 7th, with “Atomic Monsters” at 8/7c on the CW.
