For Season 3 of “Supergirl,” we dive deeper into Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) uneasy past and are drenched in her unresolved emotions triggered by wretched circumstances. Consequently, for its second episode, Supergirl is forced to look back and re-experience those feelings of grief, regret, and sorrow—for Mon-El (Chris Wood), for her parents, and her entire planet.
Foreshadowing Power of Samantha Arias
Producers told Screenrant that this fairly new character whose human name is Samantha Arias (Odette Annable) is going to be the main villain of the season. While she may appear to be a harmless, daughter-centered mom, she hides the Kryptonian power of superstrength. This superstrength was revealed in the last episode where Sam saved her daughter Ruby (Emma Tremblay) from falling debris in Waterfront.
On this episode, Ruby attempts to test her mother’s strength and honesty by putting herself in danger just to prove that her mother indeed has superpowers. And instead of showing off Sam’s assumed power on this episode, we are left with suspense. Because before we could see if Sam could seriously resist that wrecking ball, Supergirl comes to the rescue. And when she tries for herself to bend a crowbar, she again fails.
Villain of the Episode: Psychologically-enhanced robber Psi
In National City, a former Illinois-based psycho walks without so much as a weapon and robs every bank she could get her hands on. Her powers? Mind control.
Human name Gale Marsh, Criminal pseudonym Psi is on a bank-robbing spree and gets away by controlling people’s thoughts—or should we say, fear. And when she encounters Supergirl, our heroine gets trapped in a painful flashback she cannot run away from. Moments like the unbearable silence while drifting through space, her guilt over supposedly ‘killing’ her boyfriend Mon-El, and losing her parents. Even with Winn’s (Jeremy Jordan) psionic inhibitor ray, our heroine remains powerless.
That is until Supergirl realizes that all it takes is ‘mind over matter’ and a hard headbutt to knock the thief out and send her to jail.
Lena’s First day at CatCo
On her first day at CatCo, Kara’s BFF Lena, (Katie McGrath) walks in confidently—ready to mold it in tip-top shape. But when she observes that her friend always seems distracted and is usually out of the office, she assumes she’s having a hard time coping with painful things. Here we witness Kara raising her voice at Lena in the office, and the latter playing it professionally cool. In the end, though, their steel-like friendship is unbeatable and they resolve their little issue.
On the remaining minutes, Lena introduces the new CEO of CatCo—the person she will assign to supervise the company in her absence. And the person who walks in would be Samantha Arias. Both Supergirl and soon-to-be villain Sam shake hands— a landmark of the season where the opposing sides meet.
Other revelations of this episode would be our first look at M’gann after a very long time. She visits J’onn and sends him an urgent message asking him to return as soon as he could to Mars to help resolve the conflict.
To wrap it up, let’s just say we’re going to see more of Sam and her Kryptonian powers soon. And it’s going to eventually turn her into the biggest enemy to Supergirl, when though? That’s still an unanswered question. But we’re pretty sure it’s going to have something to do with her beloved daughter, Ruby.
