On tonight’s winter premiere episode of “Supergirl,” Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) is stuck in a coma, seemingly no match for Reign’s (Jessie Rath) impressive, murderous alien-villain skills—leaving the Legion of Superheroes to step into her crime-fighting shoes. Meanwhile, Future buddies Mon-El (Chris Wood) and Imra Ardeen (Amy Jackson) reveal an imminent threat to the entire galaxy in a few thousand years.
Inside Supergirl’s head is Kara Danvers
From seeing Kara get beaten to a pulp and thrown out of a maybe five-or-so-story building, it’s a little dreamlike to continue the story in such a calm, peaceful setting. Unsurprisingly, our Supergirl was in a dream, and she only realizes this when strange-looking Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath) knocks at her door and begins blabbing on about being half-computer and half-organic life form.
She soon finds out that she’s been in a coma for two days, and is on the road to recovery. But after remembering Reign and her danger to the world, she’s enraged. Unfortunately, while her mental and physical state appear to be stable, her consciousness doesn’t want her to leave just yet. And here’s why: Remember the last episode when Alex told Kara to “not be herself?” Well, that little pep talk appeared to have pushed Supergirl’s human side away—a vital part of who she is. It turns out; Kara is as crucial as this superhero. And in order to save the day, she needs the human inside of her.
And that analysis didn’t need Brainy’s level-12 intellect to figure it all out.
Legion of Superheroes try to save the day
On today’s Menu, Reign is after all sinners of the Earth. Her mission right now is to “cleanse the world of sinners and those who harbor them.” And since Apathy is said to be the greatest sin of all, she’s pretty much going after most people—playing God and judging those who’ve done wrong without due process. Because to her, the justice system is a flop.
And because Supergirl has her dilemma to fight, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), Brainy, and the police force are out to get the villain. For some strange reason, this group of highly intelligent, highly skilled, even futuristic heroes is no match for Reign. They’ve thrown a red sun bomb, giant lead chains, and also put on a kryptonite necklace—yet she can still move about and remove it. They’re unable to put her down and manage to get Alex as one of the casualties.
The Earth in the future
On the other hand, Mon-El is reluctant to participate in the fight despite Imra’s constant bugging. And when Alex asks why, they reveal that in a thousand years time, a phenomenon called ‘Blade’ will wipe out planets—leading to the human race’s oblivion. But there’s a solution: Mon-El has to disclose that written in each Legionnaire’s DNA is a secret that can save humanity. If they don’t get back to the future in time, everyone else dies. Nonetheless, their help is needed, so they decide to lend a hand. And if you ever saw them fight—no offense, but you can understand why they’re so worried. They need some training to do.
Finally, as soon as Kara Danvers gets up, the Supergirl inside her flies to fight and manages to push the Kryptonite-infused syringe into Reign’s neck despite her weakness of the material. But before of her defeat is imminent, Reign flies off. Nightfall settles in, and the sisters share their versions of what happened that day. Alex apologizes for pushing her too hard, and Kara admits that she’s beginning to move on from Mon-El. And once she does, she’ll be stronger.
“Supergirl” continues next Monday, January 22nd, with “Fort Rozz” at 8/9c on The CW.
