Suits Finale: Should Donna and Harvey Have Gotten Together?
BY Jennifer Griffin
Published 9 years ago
There was a moment in last night’s episode of Suits in which a desperate and emotional Jessica confided in Donna that she asked Gretchen to find Harvey, but in hindsight, had asked the wrong person.
It was a moment of confirmation for all the Donna and Harvey fans watching that yes, Donna is truly Harvey’s person.
It doesn’t matter that she’s working for Louis, or that she’s now dating someone else (we choose to believe she totally made that guy up just to make Harvey jealous), or that the first half of the season has seen our favorite verbal sparring duo severely at odds with each other. Donna and Harvey share a bond that is unique and unshakable. And of course, Donna did know where Harvey was, because she’s Donna, and Donna knows everything.
It therefore came as a surprise and a disappointment to some fans to see that following a season of will they/won’t they, this couple did not fall into each other’s arms in last night’s finale.
For some, the lack of a satisfying romantic conclusion is a point of vexation that is sure to percolate into season 6. Others meanwhile are content to watch this simmering almost-romance play out over seasons to come. After all, Donna is the epitome of a strong and together woman, while Harvey is currently an emotional mess. Although we may love him, he’s not exactly perfect dating material right now. Additionally, Donna may be happy to learn his therapy is going well, but it doesn’t mean she’s ready to reach out and be vulnerable all over again. And Donna being Donna, is not one to sit around waiting for a phone call. (Hey, maybe that boyfriend is real after all.)
While we were happy to see both Donna and Harvey staying true to character in last night’s highly emotional and flashback-heavy finale, we can’t help but wonder where this could-be couple are headed next season.
Not even Aaron Korsh seems to know for sure.
“The truth of the matter is I do not have an answer to that because I don’t know,” the executive Producer told TVLine in a post-finale interview.
“The story is going to take us where it goes. All of a sudden, one day, something’s going to happen and we’re going to know and then we’ll do it. In terms of major things that have happened in the course of the show, many of them were not pre-planned. Donna getting fired was not pre-planned. It happened during the middle of a rewrite. Mike getting caught was pre-planned at the beginning of this season, but I certainly didn’t know it a year ago. Even Scottie coming in and them trying to make a go of it. So many things that have happened are just in the moment, “We’re going to do this.” If something happens with Harvey and Donna, it’s going to be like that, I think. We’re still working on the back six. You never know. That’s the best I can say.”
One thing is certain. Donna and Harvey will continue to intrigue, frustrate and endear us for some time to come.
A sixth season of Suits, comprising 16 new episodes, will premiere in Summer 2016. Meanwhile, season 5 continues this Winter.
