Suicide Squad: James Gunn Addresses Fan Plea to #ReleaseTheAyerCut

With James Gunn taking over as head of the DCEU, fans have been wondering if he would be willing to give some previous DCEU directors—specifically Suicide Squad’s David Ayer—a chance to release the film his way like Zack Snyder was able to do with Justice League. Twitter was flooded with #ReleaseTheAyerCut posts, and Gunn has decided to address the whole movement.
Gunn posted this thread on Twitter addressing the fans:
Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful.

Though it all sounds nice and diplomatic about hearing what the fans have to say, Gunn did also point out:
But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.
I guess this means that there won’t be a chance to come back to something that happened in the past of the timeline, but I’m not completely giving up. I think with enough enthusiasm, and maybe some pushing from director David Ayer himself, we could eventually get the long-awaited ‘Ayer Cut’ complete with dark tone, and Jared Leto’s ‘real’ performance as the Joker.
If rumors are to be believed, the DCEU could go through one major reset with The Flash movie, but we don’t know what’s really in store for the future. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
With Ayer being one of the first directors to be plagued with studio meddling after Batman v Superman, I’m really rooting for him to be able to release his original version of Suicide Squad; hopefully Gunn is willing to listen to his pitch.
For now, you can check out DC’s Black Adam now screening in theaters.
