It’s official. Director Gavin O’Connor has been selected by Warner Bros. to direct and write the sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 DC Extended Universe film entry, “Suicide Squad.”
The DCEU was officially launched last year with “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which also stood as some kind of a sequel to Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” After “Dawn of Justice” came “Suicide Squad,” which introduced fan-favorite DC Comics villains Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), The Joker (Jared Leto), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney).
However, these two DCEU films weren’t met with largely positive reviews despite the financial success that it enjoyed. And since there’s a huge amount of budget to work with, “Suicide Squad 2” was approved by Warner Bros. as a part of the full slate of the DCEU.
Gavin O’Connor at the helm of ‘Suicide Squad 2’
Variety reports that Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) has officially stepped in to pen the screenplay and helm “Suicide Squad 2.” The sequel to the sequel is also being considered to be under O’Connor as well. Production for the film is set to begin by the end of 2017. It was previously reported that “Suicide Squad 2” won’t begin production until 2018; but since the studio is looking to fast track the movie, it makes sense for an earlier production start date.
The question here seems to be whether “Suicide Squad 2” can improve the story laid by Ayer’s original take on the supervillain team. The first “Suicide Squad” film reportedly had a bit of a shake up that led to multiple plot holes and deleted scenes. However, O’Connor has had a healthy experience in directing action films. Until we see a preview, we can rest assured that for the time being, “Suicide Squad 2” is in very capable hands.
O’Connor is currently working on the sequel to Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant.”
