We’re a little over a month away before “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters, but the latest official trailer that debuted during Monday Night Football on ESPN just gave fans the ultimate shock of their lives. The new footage reveals juicy tidbits on what’s going to happen as well as major plot points crucial to the direction of the “Star Wars” franchise.
But before we go on and freak out a little more, bask in the glory of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” first:
Now tell us, are you shocked yet?! There are a lot of things we can pick up from the trailer here, but let’s discuss a number of major reveals that we just saw in the trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Luke is afraid of what Rey can do
We see Rey finally continuing that last scene of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” where she hands over the lightsaber to Luke. She’s in Ach-To—presumably the site of the last Jedi Temple—training with Luke. There’s a number of shots where we witness the magnitude of Rey’s power, including her breaking the ground with the use of the Force. Luke then says, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then—it does now.” Is it possible that he fears that Rey would also turn to the Dark Side like what Kylo Ren did? Is Kylo the one Luke is referring to who has that kind of unparalleled strength?
After finishing off his father, will Kylo Ren also kill Leia?
Speaking of Kylo, we also see him in a space dogfight scene. It’s the first time we really see him up in space and piloting an upgraded TIE fighter (kind of like an echo to how Vader piloted his own ship back in “A New Hope”). Throughout the entire montage, we hear him say, “Let the past die. Kill it. If you have to—that’s the only way you can become what you are meant to be.” The shot then freezes over to a distressed Leia looking on while she’s on a ship. Just when the music stops, we see Kylor struggling whether or not to press a canon button and then back to Leia looking on worried. The target is obviously focused on Leia’s ship, and Kylo is trying to fight with himself if he should go in for the kill. Will this end badly for General Leia? Is this the send-off that Rian Johnson promised to do for Carrie Fisher?
Finn and Captain Phasma go head to head
Back in “The Force Awakens,” we didn’t really see much of what Captain Phasma could do (except maybe survive after being presumed to be locked in a garbage chute?). But here we see a fully-recovered Finn and Phasma with her electric staff getting it on with an impressive fight scene. Explosions and destruction are everywhere, but in the midst of it all, Finn manages to man up and finally square it off with Phasma.
Snoke lures Rey to the Dark Side?
We finally have a real-life glimpse of Supreme Leader Snoke! But during this scene, it’s obvious that he is trying to seduce someone to the Dark Side. After a shot of him is shown, we cut to a scene where Rey is writhing in agony. Is she fighting back with her tremendous Force capabilities? Is she trying her best to fight it?
“I need someone to show me my place in all this,” Rey says. And then we see both Rey and Kylo standing and talking amongst each other. Uh-oh. Kylo offers his hand, and it’s unclear if Rey takes it. Is this a plot to fool Snoke and Kylo? What about Luke implying that Rey isn’t what he thinks she is? “This is not going to go the way you think it will,” he says.
Maybe Luke is indeed the Last Jedi?
Maybe I’m asking too many questions?
We’ll never know for sure until “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters December 15th.
