It’s every Star Wars fan’s dream come true. A new report says that the beloved video game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), is getting the movie treatment from Disney and Lucasfilm. Avatar and Shutter Island scriptwriter Laeta Kalogridis is attached to write the screenplay.

According to Buzzfeed News, Kalogridis is almost done with the screenplay, although Disney offered no comment. At the Star Wars Celebration last April, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy was asked about whether or not the studio is planning to create material for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. “Yes, we are developing something to look at,” Kennedy said. “Right now, I have no idea where things might fall.”

The Rich Storyline of ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic‘s lore is currently part of the Star Wars legends canon, and a series of books and comics were released following its massive popularity. The video game series went on to become a massive hit among fans, with some clamoring for it to have its own TV show or movie (much like the hype surrounding the 501st Clones of Star Wars: Battlefront). The Knights of the Old Republic video game has the player join an insurgency against Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith and apprentice of Darth Revan. It’s set 400 years before the formation of the Empire, and the player must travel to different planets to defeat Darth Malak.

Given the underwhelming box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, having a film centered around the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic storyline can reignite the love for Star Wars spinoff films. This December, J.J. Abram’s The Rise of Skywalker will wrap up the decades-long Skywalker saga, bringing a conclusion to the story of Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa Solo. The new characters will take over the helm from here on, with another trilogy of Star Wars movies slated for 2022 until 2026. This new batch of films is currently being developed by The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the latest Lucasfilm property to join the “in development” roster, alongside the Disney+ series around Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian is in production and is expected to hit the Disney streaming platform this November.
