Star Wars Episode IX: No CGI Leia, Old Footage Of Carrie Fisher To Be Used

“Star Wars” fans all over the world are excited for Director Rian Johnson upcoming entry in the saga, “Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.” The first trailer is about to drop later this month at the “Star Wars” Celebration, and people are going crazy as they wait patiently for it. Disney has been able to keep everything about the next film secret, and fans are all beyond eager to get a glimpse of what to expect for Episode VIII. But one question still remains: what happens to Princess Leia in Episode IX? Carrie Fisher still has a big role in the saga, and her recent death still makes it hard to envision how it goes.

Carrie Fisher Will Be Back For Star Wars Episode IX No Thanks To CGI

Carrie Fisher’s tragic death, Princess Leia will still return as General Leia Organa. Fisher has finished filming all her scenes for Episode VII. Because of this, she’ll be able to appear as what the story requires her too without any alterations. But the question about “Star Wars: Episode IX” still remains. What happens to her? Leia has a huge role in Director Colin Trevorrow’s entry, and fans are wondering how the studio would move forward with Fisher’s absence.

Despite what Disney did to Princess Leia in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the use of CGI will not happen. So how will the story push through then? In a report by the New York Daily News, Fisher’s brother Todd and her daughter, Billie Lourd, has given the studio permission to include unused footage of the actress from “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi” in Episode IX. This would allow them to still have Leia without the use of CGI or writing her out.

“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t,” said Todd. “She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue… To me, Star Wars is the holy grail of storytelling and lore and you can’t mess with it.”

Though Disney never really planned to suddenly drop Leia from “Star Wars,” it’s good to know that fans will still be able to see Leia appear in Episode IX, giving her story some kind of closure. She has always been a huge part of the saga and it would be completely weird and wrong to not have her in the final part of the new “Star Wars” trilogy. While there might be a need to rewrite the script for Episode IX, at least Fisher will still be on the big screen for one final time.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters on December 15, 2017 while “Star Wars: Episode IX” is set to release on May 24, 2019.
