'Star Wars: Episode IX' Parts Ways With Director Colin Trevorrow

Colin Trevorrow is no longer part of “Star Wars: Episode IX.” Trevorrow was to helm the third and final entry of the new “Star Wars” trilogies, but Lucasfilm said in a statement that the studio is parting ways with the director following differing visions for the upcoming project.
Trevorrow is best known for helming films like “Jurassic World” and has been at work on the ninth entry into the space saga. He was announced as the official director for “Episode IX” back in August 2015 and has been busy writing the script with Jack Thorne. The second film in the new trilogy, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will premiere this December with director Rian Johnson at the helm.

Colin Trevorrow parts ways with Lucasfilm

The official statement from Lucasfilm gave no indication as to how the latest director shake-up would affect “Star Wars: Episode IX’s” May 2019 release date. Production was supposed to begin next year.
“Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ.” the statement read. “We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

This comes as the latest director mishap in the “Star Wars” universe. Earlier this year, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the “Han Solo Movie” and was replaced by Ron Howard. The untitled “Han Solo” movie is currently deep into production. In 2015, Josh Trank was also fired from another untitled “Star Wars” spinoff movie.

Who will helm ‘Star Wars: Episode IX?’

Since Trevorrow’s removal, fans have responded with mixed reactions, from snarky jokes to a sigh of relief. The director had his most recent movie this year, “The Book of Henry” which suffered divided critical reactions, often leaning towards the negative. This led to fans worrying about whether or not he could properly execute the last film f the new “Star Wars” trilogy.
In addition to the huge task of helming “Star Wars: Episode IX,” Carrie Fisher’s unexpected death also needs to be addressed in the movie. General Leia Organa will have a proper send-off in “The Last Jedi,” but was at one point one of the main players for “Episode IX.”

In the midst of this news, fans are also quick to speculate on who might take up the helm following Trevorrow’s departure. Some are suggesting that it’s high time for a female director to step in since a “Star Wars” movie has never had one. Other went as far as reconsidering David Lynch of “Twin Peaks” (who turned down the opportunity to direct “Return of the Jedi” back then) to come and step in. But perhaps the most suggested director to have popped up many times over the online storm is someone who’s already directed a successful “Star Wars” entry—J.J. Abrams. He has previously helmed “The Force Awakens,” and so Abrams could also be a very likely candidate.
But the question remains: who will be the only hope for the new “Star Wars” saga?
