“Star Wars: Episode IX” director Colin Trevorrow is promising “Star Wars” fans that the last entry in the new trilogy will be on an “emotionally resonant” note. As we wait patiently until Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits theaters, the third and last entry in the saga has been getting so much attention recently. Lucasfilm has already set a May 2019 release date for “Star Wars: Episode IX” and is set to begin shooting in January 2018—exactly a month after Episode VIII. It feels like it was just yesterday when we were all clamoring for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and now Rey’s journey is soon coming to an end.
Setting Up Star Wars: Episode IX
Trevorrow was hired to direct “Star Wars: Episode IX” back in 2015. Since then, he’s been hard at work to develop a great story to cap off the saga. Many fans have been wondering what Trevorrow has cooked up, especially since there wasn’t any narrative to begin with when J.J. Abrams started with “The Force Awakens.” The script for Episode IX had to be rewritten following the passing of Carrie Fisher.
Just like Johnson, Trevorrow has every bit of creative freedom for the project and will be able to set an epic conclusion to the trilogy as he wants it to be. It’s an intimidating task being the last director for the presumed last entry in the saga, but Trevorrow is more than willing to take on the task head-on.
A Fitting End To The Star Wars Saga
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Trevorrow discussed the process of writing the script, as well as collaborations with Abrams, Johnson and the Lucasfilm story group. Here’s what he had to say:
“The process of Star Wars began way back in August of 2015 when I looked at what J.J. and Rian had done and I’m very fortunate that I’m surrounded by some really, really brilliant producers and brilliant creative minds – Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group and my producer [Michelle] Rejwan and Kathy Kennedy and also J.J. and Rian, Larry Kasdan. I mean, these are the best minds available and everybody’s engaged in making sure this is the most satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion that we can possibly deliver.”
It’s obvious that Trevorrow understands the weight of directing the last in the new “Star Wars” trilogy. With moviegoers all over the world excited for the conclusion, as well as for the “Star Wars” spin-offs planned, it isn’t to be taken lightly. As Trevorrow puts it, “I’m going to give 120 percent of myself, I will be a shell and I will wander the Earth barefoot for the rest of my life. So at least they know I’m laying myself on the line for it.”
