Netflix’s Squid Game ended up being one of the biggest shows of 2021, and the ending of the first season had teased a return for Seong Gi-hun would try to put a stop to the games.
While we don’t know when the second season is expected to come out, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has given fans a small update on the show. When asked what we should be expecting for Season 2, Hwang told Deadline:
“There will be more great games, that’s all I can say… I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.”
Seeing that the mystery and tension of the games were so integral to the series, it’s already a big clue to know that the second season is going to focus on more games. When the season was ended, it looked like Season 2 was just going to focus on the world surrounding the games, seeing that Gi-hun wanted to put an end to them.
When it comes to returning characters besides Gi-hun, Hwang did say that a lot of them won’t be coming back “because most of them are dead.” He did say that he will try to bring some of them back for the second season, even if it’s for a flashback.
The success of Squid Game was certainly a surprise, and the series definitely had its own take with the ‘Battle Royale’ genre. While some think that the series should have just worked with one season, I’m sure more fans will be signing up to watch what other sadistic games are in store for the show—like it’s a more palatable version of Saw.
For now, you can catch the first season of Squid Game on Netflix. No release date has been set for Squid Game 2.
