Concept art had come out of Mysterio playing a bigger role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but after the deal that brought back franchise vets like Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina, the idea was left on the cutting room floor.
What’s interesting is, Phil Langone, a concept artist for No Way Home, has shared an animated storyboard revealing Mysterio killing Aunt May. Check this out:
The scene isn’t so much on how Mysterio killed May, but more of Peter reacting to May’s death, where he kind of reveals just how strong he is, relentlessly beating on Mysterio. Lagone describes in the caption, “Part of the idea being explored was Spidey is one of the strongest superheroes, but he holds back because he doesn’t want to kill anyone. But what would it sort of look like if Spidey went berserker mode?”
We kind of got an idea of how strong Peter was when he was fighting the Goblin in Happy’s apartment, but by the time he really gets to wail on him, we just have a fight on a giant Captain America shield with not much violence. I guess it did get kind of dark when Peter was ready to stab Norman with his own Goblin Glider.
Though Mysterio may not have had a major active role in No Way Home, there is room for him to appear in the future. He is a pretty interesting villain, and the way he’s being touted as some kind of hero by some characters in the world could be interesting narratively speaking.
For now, no release date has been set for the next Spider-Man movie, but Kraven the Hunter is set to come out Oct. 6.
