Sony Delays Morbius for a 5th Time

With Spider-Man: No Way Home having just released in December, you would think that Sony’s spinoff Morbius would be perfectly placed with its January 2022 release date; but it looks like the rise of the Omicron variant has forced the studio to delay the film for the fifth time.
According to Variety, Sony has decided to move Morbius from its January 28 release date to April 1, 2022. At this point, the film has been moved so many times that I wouldn’t be surprised this was all just some elaborate April Fool’s Joke.
Originally set to come out on July 10, 2020, Morbius had been constantly pushed back thanks to the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was initially pushed back to July 31, 2020; then March 19, 2021; to Oct. 8, 2021; then Jan. 21, this year; the latest shift before today was a small push back to Jan. 28.
It was no mystery that Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge hit when it came out in the box office, but with Morbius being an obscure character—and admittedly releasing too close to Spider-Man—it was probably the right decision to distance the film a bit further from NWH. Even Marvel is having a hard time fighting franchise fatigue because they have to squeeze in an entire years’ worth of content after not releasing anything in 2020. Now it’s like there’s a new Marvel joint every month.
Hopefully hype won’t be dead by the time Morbius comes along. The trailers have admittedly been interesting. I’m just hoping it will have a story closer to the Spider-Man films rather than Venom.
Catch Morbius when it hits theaters on April 1.
