SIX depicts the complicated lives of the Navy SEALs in such a way that no aspect about it is left behind. Tonight’s episode, titled “Masks,” brings about the intensity of hostage situations. No matter the circumstance, these predicaments usually end with bloodshed. The SEALs are famous for their accuracy and their skill in combat. As always, “Masks” features a kickass action sequence. The best situation that this episode handles is its portrayal of injury rehabilitation undergone by wounded or amputated soldiers.
In this episode of SIX, Agent Gina Cline (Olivia Munn), with the help of Michael Nasry (Dominic Adams) tracks down the location of the hostages taken by The Prince’s (Nikolai Nikolaeff) men. As the SEALs rescue the hostages in Azerbaijan, Alex Caulder (Kyle Schmid) undergoes rehab therapy for his hand injury.
The Wives
Before Joe “Bear” Graves leaves to go on duty, he visits his wife, Lena Graves (Brianne Davis) to say goodbye. He runs into her art teacher, Nathan (Simon Arblaster) and is immediately under the impression that they are romantically involved, so he threatens him. Lena has Nathan wait in the car as she calmed Bear down, telling him that his actions would not help them get back together. She advises him to be careful in his mission before she left.
Lena visits Jackie Ortiz (Nadine Velasquez), Ricky’s wife, in their temporary home. They talk about what happened between Joe and Nathan. When Jackie confronts her about Nathan, she denies her suspicions and tells her that Nathan was temporary. Suddenly, Anabel Ortiz (Jessica Garza), Jackie’s daughter, comes out of the house and argues with Jackie after she finds out that Jackie placed a tracking app on her phone. She walks out shortly after.
While Anabel sits on a swing to calm herself down, she notices Marissa (Katherine Evans) taking photos of her. At first, she is alarmed at what Marissa was doing. She is surprisingly impressed as she looks at her pictures. Eventually, she befriends Marissa who introduces herself as Chloe.
Rehabilitation
Bear and Ricky “Buddha” Ortiz (Juan-Pablo Raba) head to Alex’s apartment the day before their deployment. They bring a few things for him that would help him recover and keep him relaxed during his time off. Unfortunately, Bear and Buddha are called back to base before they could even start bonding, so they left immediately. Also, that same day was the day that Alex begins rehab.
During the rehab session, Alex notices a good-looking lady working out across him. She is there because of her amputated leg. As he tried to squeeze a stress ball, he is distracted by a soldier who was rapping while he was exercising. The lady notices this and tells him that they could not stop him from rapping. Alex decides to throw the stress ball at him, but the soldier smiles back at him as he continued his exercise.
They have an activity that involved expressing themselves through the use of masks. Alex thinks this idea is ridiculous. Unexpectedly, the lady he met agrees with his point. The officer in charge of the activity mentions that Alex used to feel the same. However, he insisted that they should follow through with the task. It worked for him, and it was also mandatory.
After the activity, Alex introduces himself to the lady, whose name was Dawn (Savannah Welch). They have some beers at Alex’s house as they got to know each other. The next day, the nurse who checked on Alex’s hand told him that he needed another surgery. Alex walked out of the rehab facility, frustrated. Dawn follows after him and encourages him to come back in. After an awkward attempt to kiss her, Alex eventually goes back to give rehab another try.
Back at Alex’s house, Dawn works on her tattoo on her amputated leg as a means of therapy. She has Alex open up to her about himself. After their talk, she invites Alex to join her at dinner. Alex then offers to cook her dinner. When she is convinced that Alex is not using this as an excuse to have sex, she agrees with his suggestion.
Their dinner becomes emotional as they reveal profound truths about each other. However, their night does end there since Dawn had something planned out for the rest of their night. They head to her ex-husband’s house to mutilate her motorcycle that the ex-husband got to keep from their divorce. As they take turns in hitting the bike, Dawn starts crying as she repeatedly hit it. Alex notices that she was on the verge of an emotional breakdown, so he hugs her to make her stop. Alex carries her back to his car to drive her home. Before she went back to her house, she kisses Alex. When Alex left, she took out a handgun hidden in her coffee table then she pointed it at her head.
The next morning, Alex goes to her house, bringing coffee. She finds the doors open, and he sees a note left for him on the coffee table. After he reads the letter, he puts his mask on; understanding her reasons for going.
Betrayal
Agent Cline has Michael identify the man inside the interrogation room whom they had captured from the hostage-taking. When Michael denies association to him, she orders her men to bring him into the room. The man is overjoyed to see him as he calls out his name. Satisfied, Agent Cline has her men pull him out.
The second time Agent Cline talked to Michael, she brought him a gift. Michael eventually tells her what he knows about him. His name was Vladimir Abakelia (Michael David Adamthwaite), and he trained alongside Michael. Michael agreed to help them, but he told her that they had to cover up his cooperation with them and that they needed to make it look convincing, so Agent Cline has her men beat Michael.
They bring him into the interrogation room to speak with Vladimir. At first, Michael plays out his part well, telling him not to disclose any information. Vladimir buys his acting, and he even encourages Michael, telling him to take heart. Kate Kilcannon (Samantha Ferris) impatiently tells Agent Cline to hasten the interrogation, so Agent Cline comes in and does her part for Michael’s acting by striking his hand with a nightstick.
After Agent Cline’s men torture Vladimir, they bring him back to the interrogation room. Michael makes one last show to ensure that Vladimir would trust him. His efforts become successful when Vladimir accidentally reveals the location of the safehouse that The Prince uses to keep the hostages. After realizing that Michael betrayed him, he starts to strangle Michael until Agent Cline comes in and shoots him.
Hostage Extraction
After being briefed by Commander Scott Hughes (Erik Palladino) about the hostages, namely Ambassador Andrew Hall (Ken Tremblett) and his envoys, the SEALs head to Azerbaijan, the location of The Prince’s safehouse. They receive final instructions before heading out to the field by boats. When they arrive, they kill most of the hostiles almost immediately. The SEALs search the house for any signs of the hostages when Bear hears a muffled cry behind him.
Bear looks behind and finds a hostile who is gripping a grenade while he restrains one of the hostages. He acts fast, and he saves the hostage while he kills three remaining hostiles who were hiding behind a false wall. When the threats are eliminated, he asks the hostage about the remaining two, so she tells them that they were moved to another location.
After the SEALs’ mission was complete, Agent Cline tells Michael that the Ambassador was not rescued. Also, a video surfaced online where The Prince introduces himself. His terms of release were straightforward: Michael in exchange for the Ambassador and Agent Cline in charge of the transfer. He was going to kill them both.
SIX continues next Wednesday, June 27th, with “Indian Country” at 10/9c on The History Channel.
