‘Siren’ Season 2, Episode 7 ‘Entrapment’ Recap: Boxed In
BY Daniel Rayner
Published 6 years ago
The Siren finally unites both humans and mermaids under one cause. Keeping the alliance intact, the humans involve the mermaids in strategizing their approach. However, an unexpected return diverts everyone’s attention. A body presumed lost at sea resurfaces in Bristol Cove. Now, humans and mermaids alike worry about their fate.
In this week’s episode of Siren, Captain Sean McClure’s (Brian Anthony Wilson) body resurfaces. The FBI reopens the case on his death, bringing Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) Xander McClure (Ian Verdun), Calvin Lee (Curtis Lum), and Chris Mueller (Chad Rock) in for questioning. Meanwhile, Helen Hawkins (Rena Owen) brings the mermaids out of town for their safety. As this happens, Ryn (Eline Powell) accepts Nicole Martinez’s (Natalee Linez) sketchy deal.
Ancient Cave Writings
The humans worry about the mermaids’ safety, especially since the feds are onto them. In response to the circumstances, Helen and the rest of the group let Katrina (Aylya Marzolf) lead the pack to a safe place in the mountains. Once there, they find the cave that Katrina chose. In it, various writings on the wall depicted humans and mermaids alike living in harmony, as read by both Katrina and Helen. However, their stay there may only be temporary. The mermaids needed living sea water soon as shown by Viv’s (Alvina August) deteriorating condition.
Back To Work
Sheriff Dale Bishop (Gil Birmingham) picked a heck of a day to return. Dale brings Susan Bishop (Garcelle Beauvais) to her new home, hoping that soon, she could say that she has her addiction under control. Upon reaching the station, Deputy Marissa Staub (Tammy Gillis) greeted him with strange news. Some fishermen recovered Sean McClure’s body, and the feds are bringing in Ben, Xander, Calvin, and Chris, the ship’s crew, for questioning. Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) could do nothing but wait for Ben’s return, and Ryn became her only source of comfort.
Charges Dropped
Calvin contemplated telling the truth to the feds once they were locked up. In what felt like long, excruciating hours, the trio sat in the cell. Xander remained silent through most of their time there, thinking about his dad. At some point, Calvin completely lost his cool and made up his mind. Xander, on the other hand, had no care of what was about to happen. He did not mind if he ended up in prison. As Chris got escorted by a police officer into the station, they all knew their fate. No matter how hard Ben tried to convince them to be silent, Chris’ arrival invalidated his words. Drunk and mentally unwell, Chris was bound to tell the feds about the mermaids.
When the time for their interviews finally came, their stories were all but consistent. Each of their testimonies began, progressed, and ended differently. In desperation, Ben goes as far as confessing to the crime, saying that it was an accident. According to him, the net entangled Sean, so Ben tried to use a spear to cut him loose. However, a strong wave hit the ship, causing him and his full weight to pierce Sean’s chest.
The lawyer’s arrival happened shortly after the interviews, and the results were not good. The inconsistencies in their stories, as well as Ben’s confession, made the feds press charges against them. However, a sudden whiff in the wind changes the entire situation. The U.S. Military cancels their case, letting them go free. At that point, Ben, Xander, and Calvin knew that the government had eyes on them.
Shady Deal
Nicole knew that Ryn is the pack’s leader. After contacting her commanding officer, she puts her plan into place. Ryn made the mistake of trying to have Xander and Cami (Millan Tezfagi) talk things through. Instead of finding Xander, Ryn and Cami met Nicole in Xander’s boat. Later, Ryn would reencounter Nicole at Maddie’s apartment along with Calvin’s girlfriend, Janine (Hannah Levien). Nicole takes her chance to talk to Ryn when Maddie and Hannah leave. However, Ryn aggressively commanded her to go as soon as she mentions soldiers.
Seeing Maddie cry was Ryn’s last straw. Without any further consideration, Ryn decided to seek out Nicole at the bar. Ryn desperately needed to have her, and her people return to the ocean, so she makes a deal with Nicole. Ryn was willing to undergo tests by the Military in exchange for her people’s safe return to the sea. When Ben and the others finally meet at the bar, Xander realizes who Nicole really is.
‘Siren’ Season 2, Episode 7 ‘Entrapment’ Final Verdict
Arguably, this episode has it all: additional information on the mermaid’s backstory, the return of the conflict between the government and Ben’s group, and turmoil within the lives of the main characters themselves. Despite having the feel of a filler episode, this chapter laid out the start of this season’s central conflict. In turn, one can expect much substantial content in the next ones.
Siren continues Thursday, March 14th with ‘Leverage’ at 8/7c on Freeform.
