'Siren' Season 2, Episode 6 'Distress Call' Recap: Common Enemy

The Siren eliminates any threats to her loved ones’ lives. However, the Human World, governed by laws, does not condone what she did. Meanwhile, the Pownalls seem to have an erupting civil war. With the head of the family working alongside the oil company, the environmentalist has no choice but to take matters in his hands.

In this week’s episode of Siren, Dale Bishop (Gil Birmingham) picks up after the mess that Susan Bishop (Garcelle Beauvais) brought to Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Ryn (Eline Powell). Meanwhile, Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) confronts his family about their involvement with the oil company. Later, Ryn uses her diplomatic skills to reunite the mermaids.

Cleanup

Dale knew how to keep his cool despite how bad the situation that Susan, Maddie, and Ryn caused. Susan’s dealer, Glen (Christopher Rosamond) lay dead on the floor. After quickly assessing the scene, Dale sends Susan and Maddie home. Before dealing with Glen, Dale brings Ryn to her apartment, telling her about laws abided by residents of the human world. After this, he returns to the motel to change the scenario: he makes Glen’s death a drug-related accident. At home, Susan asks for Maddie’s forgiveness. She goes as far as promising Maddie to become better, but Maddie does not accept this. Instead, Maddie empties Susan’s bag, revealing more drugs.

By the time the police reach the scene the next morning, Dale knew what Deputy Marissa Staub (Tammy Gillis) would say. He manages to link Glen’s “accident” to the city’s numerous unsolved drug trafficking cases. However, Dale still has problems at home. Because of Susan’s relapse, he decides to lay her off of the house. Susan could no longer stay in their home if she wished to remain in Bristol Cove. Instead, she had to deal with her addiction before returning to them. Meanwhile, Maddie returns her shared apartment, greeted by an apologetic Ryn.

Home Invasion

Xander McClure (Ian Verdun) patiently texted Nicole Martinez (Natalee Linez) as he waited in the boat’s cabin. Suddenly, Katrina (Aylya Marzolf) and Cami (Millan Tezfagi) appear out of nowhere and take him hostage. Inside the holding room, Xander meets the wounded Levi (Sedale Threatt Jr.) whom he beats despite his apology for killing Xander’s father. Eventually, Xander realizes that killing Levi is wrong. Fortunately, he remembers that he has his phone, enabling him to call for help.

After phoning Calvin Lee (Curtis Lum), who is too busy having sex with Janine (Hannah Levien), Xander calls Ben instead. Discovering that Levi is not in his house, Ben drives away when he receives Xander’s call. Surprised with the situation, Ben immediately turns towards the direction of the harbor. It took some time and wit to get Cami off guard. Ben covers for Xander as he helped Levi limp to Ben’s car. Luckily, Ben, Xander, and Levi escape from Katrina and Cami. As Cami screamed in anger, Nicole watched from a distance, fascinated by what she saw.

Confrontational

While Ben stitches Levi up, Xander admits to telling Katrina about the oil company’s boat. Thinking that she would help him, Xander offered to bring Katrina closer to destroying the ship. In return, Katrina must bring Xander to Levi. Katrina double crossed Xander, attempting to take Xander’s boat from him and holding him hostage along with Levi. Luckily, Ben rescued them from the mermaids. When Calvin arrives, Ben introduces him to Levi.

As Xander and Calvin decide to work with Ben and the mermaids, Ben receives a message from Ian Sutton (Luc Roderique), inviting him to talk about the oil company story. Ben and Xander knew that Ted Pownall (David Cubitt) is in cahoots with the oil company, so he tells Ian about this. Unfortunately, Ian’s story was canceled by the network after receiving a bribe from the oil company. With that, Ben decides to confront his family instead.

Ted, Elaine (Sarah-Jane Redmond), and Doug (Andrew Jenkins) Pownall remained indignant. During breakfast, they justify their company’s actions by stating that it was Elaine’s idea. The townsfolk needed jobs, and working with the oil company brought jobs to them. Also, the Pownalls will remain involved in the decision making for the oil company’s long term plans. Regardless, Ben stayed unimpressed and disappointed. After this unhealthy family breakfast, Ben met up with Maddie.

Reuniting the Mermaids

Jack Rowand/Freeform

In the absence of Ben, Maddie, and Ryn, Helen Hawkins (Rena Owen) took care of the sirens. Viv (Alvina August), Eliza (Georgia Waters), and Sarge (Hugo Ateo) remained in Helen’s home. Helen even develops a close relationship with Sarge. However, Katrina manages to convince Viv to join her while Eliza chooses Ryn, fleeing from Katrina’s aggressive actions. When Helen takes notice of what is happening, she immediately calls for Ben, Maddie, and Ryn’s help.

To get Katrina to talk with her, Ryn had Sarge deceive Katrina into heading to the burial ground. Katrina, Viv, and Cami prepared to ambush Ryn, but suddenly, Ryn and her allies reveal themselves. To end the conflict for good, Ryn talks to Katrina about their common goal. Ultimately, their goal outweighed their differences. In a symbolic, mermaid way, Ryn and Katrina make peace. Now, both Humans and Sirens have one purpose: destroy the oil company’s ship. Unknown to them, a fishing boat far off the coast is about to discover the Sirens’ existence.

‘Siren’ Season 2, Episode 6 ‘Distress Call’ Final Verdict

Susan’s return brought much trouble to the Bishops, and as cruel as it may sound, her departure from them is for the best. Maddie has her hands full with dealing with the ocean’s crisis. Also, Dale’s job as the town sheriff availed them no time to deal with a situation at home. Inevitably, Ben will have to face the Pownalls. It is evident that no family line is greater than the threat to the town’s waters.

Siren continues Thursday, March 7th with ‘Entrapment’ at 8/7c on Freeform.
