'Siren' Season 2, Episode 3 'Natural Order' Recap: Leadership Skills

The Siren and her helpers barely manage to keep the newcomers alive and away from human eyes. However, this new life setup presents more significant problems for everyone involved. With issues ranging from basic needs to multiple in-land threats, Bristol Cove’s new settlers find themselves lost, but not alone.

In this week’s episode of Siren, Katrina (Aylya Marzolf) takes advantage of Ryn’s (Eline Powell) weakening condition to contest the pack’s leadership. Meanwhile, Helen Hawkins (Rena Owen) finally receives her cheque– and more. As this happens, Xander McClure (Ian Verdun) nears his breaking point as he struggles with keeping the secret of his father’s death.

Keeping The Secret

Xander was starting to notice something odd with his girlfriend, Nicole Martinez (Natalee Linez). Regardless, this did not distract him from thinking about his father’s murder. Deputy Marissa Staub (Tammy Gillis) mentions something about Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) having a party at his family’s cabin. Xander knew that it involved the mermaids, including his father’s killer. Xander’s curiosity got hold of him, so he decides to investigate the cabin. However, he finds nothing of interest.

That night, Xander had a nightmare about his death. As he woke up screaming and crying, Nicole tries to comfort him. Finally, Xander breaks and reveals his father’s murder. Still, he keeps the existence of the sirens a secret by saying that the multiple boats they encountered brought the killer to them. It was only a matter of time before Nicole learns the truth about the mermaids. Soon, Xander will get his chance to exact revenge on his father’s killer, too.

Elaine Pownall (Sarah-Jane Redmond) stood in Helen’s way as she tries to claim the cheque meant to silence her family about their relationship with the Pownalls. Because of this, Ben had to intervene. Ben manages to convince his mom to release the cheque after he tells her a fake cover story. He reasons that Helen is sick, and she needs money for hospital bills. While Elaine had a DNA test made to contest Helen’s relationship with them, Ben’s story compelled her to let the money go. Ben helped Helen acquire two things that day: the money needed to sustain the sirens and, thanks to the DNA test, someone previously thought to be impossible to exist: Helen’s relative, Rick Marsden (Brendan Fletcher).

After Ben manages to find Rick’s address, he tells Helen about him. Overjoyed, Helen decides to visit Rick at his workplace but approaches him carefully, so she does not spook him. Rick reluctantly talked to Helen but confirms that he has been looking for relatives for quite some time. Also, Helen noticed a rash on his hand, similar to when sirens have scales after prolonged deprivation of seawater. This rash confirms that Rick is not only her relative, but is also part siren.

After the incident in the convenience store, Deputy Staub questions Ben about the event. The store clerk reported seeing the troublemakers enter Ben’s van, so Deputy Staub tracked him. Now that the police is onto them, Ben realized that the cabin is no longer safe for the sirens. However, this was not the only problem. Ryn needed to get back into the water, and after the beach incident, having the sirens head there meant definite harm to them. With that, Ben and Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) improvise. They decided to move the sirens to one of the Marine Observatory’s stockrooms.

Ben theorized that having Ryn, and perhaps the rest of the Sirens, soak inside a tank full of seawater would rejuvenate them. If his theory is right, the seawater filled tank would no longer require them to return to the sea. As Ben, Maddie, and the other sirens worked on an engine that could pump seawater to the tank, Katrina had her eyes on Ryn, noticing that she is weak. Katrina knew that this was her last chance to contest the leadership of the pack.

Just as Ben and Maddie got the engine running, the weakened Ryn and Katrina chased each other to the tank. Once they both land inside it, Ryn and Katrina battled each other to the death. Luckily, Ryn emerges victorious, despite being distracted by Ben’s intervention.

A Cure to the Song

After Ryn transformed back to human form, she, Ben, and Maddie decide to work on a cure to Ben’s addiction to the song, since he thought he heard it, hence his intervention to the battle. Maddie thought that by analyzing the frequency of Ryn’s song, they would be able to find a match to its sound wave pattern and figure out a way to make Ben immune to it. Maddie wore noise-canceling headphones to keep her from hearing Ryn’s song as the microphone recorded her song. After this, Ryn admitted that she wanted to sing to Ben after the first time she did it. The duo kept this a secret from Ben, thinking that it would be better that way.

That night, Ben had trouble sleeping. He could not stop himself from thinking about the recording of Ryn’s song. No longer able to contain himself, Ben stood up and plugged the flash drive containing the file to his laptop. Now, Ben faced the dilemma, should he play the song and ease his urge, or keep himself from being hooked to it?

‘Siren’ Season 2, Episode 3 ‘Natural Order’ Final Verdict

At this point, the show continues to establish a solid introduction to this season’s main plot. It continues to lay out the events that will lead up to the ensuing conflict between the sirens and the humans. However, it is likely that the plot is not this simple. With the humans not knowing about the sirens, the possibility that they would fight among each other is not out of the question. Things like that are bound to happen since we are afraid of things we do not understand.

Siren continues Thursday, February 14th with ‘Oil & Water’ at 8/9c on Freeform.
