Netflix may have gotten the visually stunning The Sea Beast, but Apple TV+ has landed Skydance Animation’s first feature Luck. The movie is set to come out next month, and we have a new trailer featuring the unluckiest girl in the world Sam Greenfield.
Watch this:
The official description reads:
From Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation, Luck is a story about Sam Greenfield: the unluckiest person in the world. Suddenly finding herself in the never-before-seen Land of Luck, she must unite with the magical creatures there to turn her luck around.
Sam is voiced by Eva Nobledeza, but she will be paired with Simon Pegg who plays the part of the black cat who gives Sam the coin. Other stars in the movie include Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Fonda, Flula Borg, and Lil Rel Howery.
With shows like Human Resources and Big Mouth already on Netflix, Luck kind of feels like it’s in the same vein, with a secret organization of cartoon characters controlling the lives of humans everyday. I guess with Luck, it’s not really based on psychology, but more of cultural folk tales and stories of ‘good luck’ and ‘bad luck.’
I’m just curious what kind of message it has by the end of the film, since ‘luck’ is pretty flimsy of a concept if you ask me. With Disney and Illumination dominating the animated market, there’s a lot of pressure on Skydance if they want to compete.
Catch Luck when it premieres on Apple TV+ on Aug. 5.
