Unofficial 'Shazam!' Costume First Look Image Leaks Online

We might have just got our unofficial first look at what Zachary Levi could look like in costume as the lightning god-slash pre-teen kid superhero in “Shazam!” The movie is currently in production in Toronto, Canada, but fans have been desperately longing for an official announcement from its director, David F. Sandberg.
We’ve got preview images on set from Asher Angel (who plays the younger Billy Batson) on his Instagram feed, with the latest photo featuring the entire child cast of “Shazam!” Apart from that, we still haven’t seen anything from the hero himself. That’s all about to change, however, as Reddit is a buzz, thanks to a leaked photo shared by /u/vivaelsam.

PHOTO: First Look at Shazam? from DC_Cinematic

In the photo, Zachary Levi is shown donning “Shazam’s” iconic red tights. Levi appears to be in a shopping mall during Christmas, so it’s not clear if this is a scene that we’ll probably see in the movie or not. In the far left corner, you can see Mark Strong. This image might be evidence of an encounter between Strong’s character, Dr. Sivana, and “Shazam” himself.

‘Shazam’s’ suit design explained

But that’s not the only interesting bit, though. The suit also appears to be inspired by the New 52 iteration of “Shazam’s” suit, which features a hood and the gold lining along the edges of his cape. It’s also strikingly similar to Alex Ross’ work, which is more realistic than comic book-y. This kind of costume feel is a major deviation from the current suits in the DC Extended Universe. The DC superheroes we’ve seen so far in “Justice League” featured more armor and a heavy amount of leather padding, whereas this version of “Shazam” has a more “grounded” and realistic design.
This design for “Shazam’s” suit might not fit well with the full slate of DC films, but then again, the film isn’t a part of the overall narrative of the DCEU. In the comics, Shazam/Billy Batson’s suit is made from magic—eliminating the need to make it look bulkier. It’s also worth noting that the suit’s design comes from how Billy imagines himself wearing the suit, so it could also explain the campy and colorful theme.
Given the attention that this photo is getting, an official response from Warner Bros. with regards to the movie might just be around the corner.
“Shazam” is scheduled for release on April 5, 2019.
