'Sharp Objects' To End In Season 1: Showrunner Says 'This Is It'

It’s final. The Gillian Flynn novel based psychological thriller series Sharp Objects is only getting one season. Showrunner Marti Noxon announced the decision at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Wednesday. “We’re not talking about a Season 2,” Noxon said. “This is it, so bask in it while you can.”

After HBO’s limited series Big Little Lies earned a second season, expectations rose for the network to do the same for Sharp Objects. After all, it garnered over 30 percent more viewers than Big Little Lies, according to Vanity Fair. However, it seems that everyone agrees one season is enough–including author Gillian Flynn.

At the TCA panel, Flynn said that eight episodes were the right amount to tell Camille Preaker’s story. “It did need that length, again, just to make sure that Camille and her story and that character study didn’t get lost within the mystery itself,” Flynn said. “As you saw, we don’t even get to what Camille’s particular issue is … until the end of the first episode.”

Amy Adams Does Not Want To Return

In an interview with Vanity Fair before the series premiere, Amy Adams shared what it was like to be Camille Preaker for five months. “I often said that if I left set or left a scene feeling like I needed to cry or left crying, I had done my job. Because Camille isn’t someone who’s going to cry in front of people, she’s going to internalize that pain. I felt like I had residual pain from her more than pain playing her.”

Adams also added that she would often suffer morning insomnia where Camille would “catch up” to her. The actress said she’d often wake up with unexplained terror or self-loathing which she’d have to work out of.

Luckily, everyone seems to stand by Adams’ decision. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys explained why they chose not to line up a second season for the show. “I’ll tell you the difference. For ‘Big Little Lies,’ Reese [Witherspoon], Nicole [Kidman], Laura [Dern], Shailene [Woodley], and Zoe [Kravitz] — they all wanted to do it again. This is very, as you know the show is dark, and Amy’s character is very dark.” Bloys told TheWrap.

“It’s a difficult role for an actress to play. I believe she doesn’t want to play that character again, which I completely understand. It’s a lot to take on, and without her, I just don’t see. I think this is one where you gotta say, ‘We got a fantastic limited series, and we’ll leave it at that,” Bloys added.

Noxon clarified that after eight episodes, the show would be ending August 26th.
