Season's Beatings! Violent Night Sequel in Development

While Christmas movies kind of fall in their own genre, we’ve been getting some hybrid holiday titles over the past few years. Last year gave us Violent Night starring David Harbour which was kind of a ‘Die-Hard-but-Santa-is-John-McClane’ story; now news has it that we’ll be getting more of Harbour’s Kris Kringle.

As reported by The Wrap, a sequel to Violent Night is already in the works. Director Tommy Wirkola confirms, “We’re talking about [a Violent Night sequel] and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order.”

We don’t have any synopsis for the movie yet, but Wirkola did admit that there is a lot to the Santa Claus lore that they have yet to explore. He continues, “There’s stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, the elves… But story-wise I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope, but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.”

This is just my speculation, but since the first movie is kind of an homage to a classic action trope with Christmas elements put on it, maybe the sequel could be another action film with some more Santa tropes added on. I can imagine a buddy-cop movie where Santa has to work with another holiday figure, or maybe something like Speed where Santa has to help passengers on a plane taken hostage.

It’s just an idea.

No release date has been set for the Violent Night sequel.
