A 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Riverdale Spin-off Is Now in the Works

After seeing The CW’s darker take on Archie Andrews and his gang in “Riverdale,” the network is now ready to deliver yet another Archie Comics adaptation—this time in the form of a “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” spin-off. Aptly titled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” it is a supernatural horror TV series that acts as a companion to “Riverdale.” It will also be heavily based on the 2014 Sabrina comic line of the same name.

It was announced earlier today by Archie Comics that the “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” spin-off is being developed by The CW and Warner Bros. TV. The network says that this take on the character will be a “dark drama in the horror genre” and will indeed be titled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” It’s unclear when Sabrina will make her debut, with it being a companion to “Riverdale.” It may be that she will make her appearance on the show before it spins off to “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
According to the press release, the “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” spin-off will be a “dark coming-of-age story” that will ground itself in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The show aims to take off from “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist” and will find Sabrina trying to come to terms with her true origins as a half-witch and half-mortal. She will also face evil foes who try to threaten her, her family and ultimately the entire world.

The CW has officially ordered “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” to a script development deal with the comic book source material writer and “Riverdale” showrunner  Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Lee Toland Krieger is set to direct. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater will serve as the show’s executive producers.
Ever since “Riverdale” hit The CW, Archie comics fans have been clamoring for Sabrina to make her TV debut once again. However, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” has already made an appearance on ABC as a sitcom created by Nell Scovell and starred Melissa Joan Hart as the titular character. The series ran from 1996 to 2003. And now that the series is being developed on The CW once again, it’s definitely exciting to see how it would play out, especially now that a crossover with Archie and co. in “Riverdale” is very likely to happen.
“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will premiere sometime between the 2018-2019 TV season.
