In this week’s episode of Roseanne, Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) try to figure out where their Mom, Beverly (Estelle Parsons) should stay after she got kicked out of the retirement home. Dan (John Goodman) lets his grandson, Mark (Ames McNamara) help him construct a birdhouse for his client. However, Dan finds Mark’s idea unsuitable for his customer, so he rejects it, but Darlene (Sara Gilbert) defends her son.
The Birdhouse
Mark finds his grandfather in the living room, working on a project. Curious, Mark asks Dan about what he is doing. Dan then talks to him about his drywall job for one of the neighbors and answers Mark’s ridiculous questions. After their discussion, Dan agrees to have Mark construct the birdhouse, one of the projects that Dan is working on for his client.
When Mark finishes the birdhouse, Dan is shocked. He dismisses it as a failure by saying that his client would not like Mark’s design. Darlene steps in and mentions how strange Dan’s client is, but Dan says that he would have to re-do the birdhouse. Mark apologizes to his grandfather and leaves. Darlene continues to reason with Dan, mentioning things about creativity. Still, Dan remains firm in his stance which has no room for Mark’s type of creativity.
Darlene goes to Dan and tells him that Mark has not gone out of his room for hours. Dan then tells her a story about his high school football career, saying that he could have been a professional football player if he had followed his coach’s instructions to him instead, but Darlene counters this with the real reason why Dan could not have been a “pro.” Mark comes out of his room and presents the birdhouse. While Mark thinks that it is boring, Dan says that his client would like it. Mark then tells Darlene that he added his creative touch into the birdhouse by painting the interior. Darlene comforts Mark by saying that he should find the balance between breaking and keeping the rules.
Beverly’s New Home
After being kicked out of the retirement home, Beverly temporarily stays at Roseanne’s house. During breakfast, Roseanne and Jackie discuss what the situation is like to have Beverly as well as Darlene and her kids all under the same roof. Eventually, they argue about whether or not Beverly should stay and have initially decided that they were to take turns in taking care of Beverly.
The ladies of the house try to relax as they invite some of their friends for a game of poker. Harris (Emma Kenney) wins the first round. Once the first round ends, the ladies have a short chat. This conversation eventually leads to an argument between Roseanne and Beverly. Beverly worsens the situation by playing with Roseanne’s patience.
Early in the morning, Roseanne heads to Jackie’s apartment with Beverly. Jackie is surprised at first, noticing how soon it was. Roseanne reasons out that it technically is Monday already, so it was Jackie’s turn. Upon Beverly’s arrival, Jackie tries to avoid Beverly by leaving her apartment. When she returns, Beverly starts to criticize everything she sees. Jackie tries to counter this by kissing her mother.
Jackie wakes up to a completely rearranged living room. After her ranting, she starts looking for her mom. Jackie discovers that Beverly has left the apartment, so she calls Roseanne. Roseanne picks up Jackie at her place while she is still in the middle of her Uber drive. Along the way, Becky (Lecy Goranson) calls them, telling them that she will take care of her grandmother. Roseanne and Jackie are relieved, but they feel that Becky’s reason for doing this is so that she could take advantage of her grandmother’s wealth, so they tell her that Beverly is broke. However, Becky remains firm in her decision of housing Beverly in her apartment.
Roseanne has snacks with Jackie in the kitchen. Becky suddenly enters, saying that they need to get Beverly out of her apartment. Apparently, Beverly is having sex with someone in Becky’s apartment. Jackie sees the absurdity of the situation, and Becky continues to rant about Beverly. Roseanne and Jackie then decide to bring Beverly out of Becky’s apartment.
Once Roseanne and Jackie arrive in Becky’s apartment, Beverly introduces him to her boyfriend, Lou (Christopher Lloyd). Lou remarks how he would have mistaken Beverly’s daughters for her sisters, but Jackie disagrees. Lou then tells Beverly to join him in driving somewhere, but he would need a car to do that. Beverly tells them to take her home with them as well and asks them to help put on Lou’s socks. After this, Beverly gives them an ultimatum: they must decide on where she would stay in permanently, so Jackie and Roseanne decide while Lou waits for them outside. In the end, it is Jackie who gets to have Beverly stay with her.
When Jackie goes back in the room to get Beverly, Beverly threatens to jump out of the window since she feels unwanted. They have a short fight, but Beverly gets down from the suitcase she stands on when Jackie pulls her back. They decide that they would try to make things work between them. Dan and Roseanne thank Jackie when she arrives in the house. Jackie tells them that it was the right thing to do.
“Roseanne” continues next Tuesday, May 8th, with “Go Cubs” 8/9c on ABC.
