We’ve seem Romeo & Juliet adapted to no end onscreen, but Hulu has something different in store with their spinoff Rosaline starring Kaitlyn Dever.
The movie comes to Hulu this week, and we have a new clip that has Rosaline having a moment with Juliet, trying to convince her to break up with a Romeo she had just met. Watch this:
For context, Rosaline is actually a character from the original Shakespeare play who doesn’t really appear in it. She’s the reason that Romeo actually comes to the party, but he runs into Juliet, and he immediately drops Rosaline to pursue her.
So far, the film looks like it’s going to be Romeo and Juliet but from the eyes of Rosaline, and it’s possible that they could write in that Rosaline was actually behind some of the events that happened in the original story—all in her attempt to try and win Romeo back.
While these period movies are admittedly an acquired taste, I think Rosaline has that fun tone that should get fans interested even if old-timey romances aren’t their thing. If anything, the property even looks to be criticising Shakespeare through a modern social lens, and I think that’s worth exploring.
“Rosaline” is a fresh and comedic twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story “Romeo & Juliet”, told from the perspective of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever), who also happens to be Romeo’s recent love interest. Heartbroken when Romeo (Kyle Allen) meets Juliet (Isabela Merced) and begins to pursue her, Rosaline schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy.
Catch Rosaline now available on Hulu.
