'Reverie' Season Finale 'Point of Origin' Recap: Second Chances

While heading home for your birthday, expecting surprises are quite reasonable. The essence of a surprise is not to know what to expect, but a company breakdown crosses the line. When Oniratech faces an emergency, the Oniratech team swiftly deals with the issue. With the launch of  Reverie 2.0 at hand, the company could not afford to lose any more assets.  However, calling for backup may not be enough in this situation.

In the season finale of Reverie, Oliver Hill (Jon Fletcher) abducts Alexis Barrett (Jessica Lu). Meanwhile, Oniratech staff, led by Paul Hammond (Sendhil Ramamurthy) prevent their servers from crashing. Charlie Ventana (Dennis Haysbert) and Monica Shaw (Kathryn Morris) go on a rescue mission to save Alexis. At the headquarters, Mara Kint (Sarah Shahi) uses the program to get through with Oliver while helping Alexis escape.

Saving Alexis

Alexis wakes up in an induced Reverie. Oliver talks to her there, telling her his reasons behind his plan. To Oliver, the program is a threat to the human race. Oliver comes up with a few ideas. First, the company partnered with the military. The military could use the program in a harmful way. Also, the derealization problem threatens mental health. After this, Oliver leaves Alexis inside the room.

After Mara’s brief visit to Ray McConley (Christopher Redman), she and Paul immediately head back to the headquarters. At his office, Charlie receives word about Alexis’ emergency from her parents. Moments later, the program’s servers detect activity on Alexis’ signature. Shortly after Charlie gets information from Oliver’s computer from his apartment, Mara enters the program to try and locate Alexis.

When Mara finally gets Alexis out, they encounter tricks that Oliver set up to demoralize Alexis. However, the last challenge Alexis had to finish was something she made herself. Similar to Mara’s previous experience, the program unearthed Alexis’ greatest fears. Still, Mara’s encouragement helped her see through the mind tricks the program made. Eventually, Alexis wakes up to the sight of Charlie sitting by her side.

With Monica’s help, Charlie located and rescued Alexis. However, this was merely a diversion. Oliver managed to enter the headquarters, disguised as a repairman. Using Alexis’ security key, Oliver locked the server room to put his plan into place. Because of this, Paul called the police to surround the building while the staff evacuated. Oliver wanted to burn the servers, so he brought in buckets of a highly flammable powder.

As Oliver laid out the power inside the server room, Mara tries to talk him. Fortunately, Charlie prevented Oliver from lighting up the other areas sprinkled with powder. Moments later, Charlie and Mara exit the building as firefighters entered. Also, some medics bring Oliver, unconscious, to the hospital. It would take the company several days to get back on their schedule.

Before the company called for an assembly at the lobby, Mara goes back to Ray one last time. Mara recognizes that she took something from Ray. Also, it was unfair for him to forget the appearances of his family. Because of this, Mara hands him a photo of his family. When Mara left, Ray placed the picture close to his chest. Moments later, he dies peacefully.

During a board meeting, Alexis happily announces that Reverie 2.0 is ready for launch. Before this, Alexis decided to let the past go. Alexis opens up to Dylan (Kai Scott) about the night of his accident. During her speech, Alexis surprises the staff by upgrading Dylan’s voice to how he could have sounded like at present. Everyone happily counted down with Dylan (Joshua Chang) as the program finally launches worldwide.

In contrast to the happy moment, Paul notices that the program’s monitoring system shows that Mara is in the program. As he explains it to Mara, they quickly realize that an anomaly happened during Alexis’ rescue. Inside the program, the glitch manifested itself in Mara’s last appearance. The Oniratech team had to deal with this before anything wrong happened.

The season ended in the best way possible. Mara finally gave her and Ray closure on the deaths of their loved ones. Also, Alexis has closure as well when she finally upgrades Dylan’s voice features. The first season excellently played out the different elements of the program. Lastly, the underlying plot of Mara’s tragic past does not interfere with the main storylines.

The program’s launch brings greater responsibilities as well as more significant risks. As seen in the ending, a critical glitch happened just as the program launched. Perhaps the second season will place more focus on the Reverie. While there is nothing wrong with Mara’s tragic past plot, the program does deserve a bit more attention. The end of this episode could be a way to smoothly transitioning to a different, series-long plot.
