With a year full of reboots, and remakes, one cannot escape this fate especially if you’ve been one of the longest-running franchises in film history. After the supposed last installment of “Resident Evil,” we’ve now just learned that Constantin Film is planning to to do a hard reboot of the series (with a new one actually in development.)
Resident Evil Reboot: A New Chapter?
As reported by Variety, there is no word yet as to who will star and helm the “Resident Evil” reboot. It sound like there is still life in the franchise, as a new narrative is also being planned for the succeeding films.
“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” pulled in an whopping $312 million worldwide from a budget of just $40 million. While panned by critics, it’s no doubt that the studio won’t let go of the franchise just yet. It’s a usual case in Hollywood where franchises and series continue to thrive due to money still being made after all these years—whether we like it or not. But in this case, it looks like casual and die-hard “Resident Evil” fans are still hungry for more.
Resident Evil’s Roots
Based on Capcom’s popular zombie video game series, the first theatrical adaptation came out in 2002 under Director Paul W.S. Anderson. Milla Jovovich went on to reprise her role in every installment since then. Five sequels have been released and the franchise took home a $1.2 billion worldwide gross.
None of the films have been extensively well-reviewed, but the “Resident Evil” series have continued to garner in huge fanbases. As long as you watch these movies with the right expectations, a well-written story for fans can still be churned out. We’ve got to admit, Milla Jovovich kicking serious ass is always a good watch.
However, there’s not much details revealed in terms of the reboot. But with a fresh blank slate, we can imagine that we won’t be seeing any of the original characters back on screen. We don;t even know if Alice is still the main character, or if she’ll even be involved in the backstory at all.
