Goodfellas alum Ray Liotta is set to make his return to the mob movie genre as he is currently in talks to join The Many Saints of Newark, a direct prequel to the hit HBO series, The Sopranos.
According to TheWrap, The upcoming project at New Line will be set in the ’60s during the Newark race riots. It was a five-day uproar that was sparked by the beating of a black man in the hands of white police officers. The Newark riots was a fatal event for the African American community as well as the American Italian mobsters; it left 26 people dead and hundreds injured.
Liotta’s role in The Many Saints of Newark is being kept under wraps. However, the actor will be joining an impressive lineup comprised of Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Jon Bernthal, Michael Gandolfini. Fun fact—Michael is James Gandolfini’s son, and he will be portraying the young Tony Soprano.
Alan Taylor will serve as the director, from a script written by The Sopranos creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner.
Liotta is a staple face when it comes to action-mobster films. The actor is best known for his portrayal of Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 flick Goodfellas. He most recently starred in NBC’s Shades of Blue, where he played Police Lieutenant Matt Wozniak opposite Jennifer Lopez.
The Many Shades of Newark has no set release date as it is scheduled to begin production soon.
